Has something like this ever happened to you? It’s been a long day and you’re feeling exhausted. You turn off the lights in your bedroom, get into bed, and start to drift to sleep, when all of a sudden you feel someone sit down on your bed. You immediately open your eyes and see nothing there – but the feeling of physical weight that someone is sitting next to you doesn’t go away. If you have ever experienced something like this, it means you may have had a spirit visitation. Below i’ve listed some tell-tale signs to know when there is really a spirit around you.
1. Babies & Children See Them
Recently a client of mine sent me a video of her baby taken from their baby monitor. The room was empty but the baby was laughing, smiling, and interacting with someone that wasn’t there. Although the footage seemed a little creepy, it was a true sign that a loved one was there pay a visit. Your loved ones in spirit get so excited when a child is born! The same way that friends and family come to visit the newborn, those in spirit also make their visitations. When babies are just born, they can sense, feel and see those in spirit. So, next time your child is looking and pointing to an empty room it might be a sign that someone is there with them, paying a visit!
2. Pets See and Sense Spirit and Energy
The same way that young children can see spirits, so do our pets. In fact, that’s the reason why pets are not afraid of death and dying. They can see those in spirit much like a psychic medium can. It’s not uncommon for pet owners that have passed away to come back and visit their beloved pets. Many times pet owners will notice that their dog will randomly bark at a chair that your loved one always sat in, or they might even follow something around the room. These are signs a loved one or spirit is near.
I once had a client who lost her husband. Every time her husband came to visit in spirit, her dog would go crazy! The dog would walk from room to room barking. It would even bark at the coat stand where her husband always kept the leash before taking it on walks. She noticed when the dog would act this way, it was as if her husband was still in the house.
3. Feeling a Chill or Touch
When a spirit enters a room, we can sometimes physically feel their energy. Have you ever felt a rush of cold enter the room, or a chill run down your spine? You might have been feeling a spirit. When your loved ones check up on you, at times you can actually feel their energy in the room with you. I once knew a woman who every so often would feel her husband sit on her bed. She knew it was him checking up on her. Sometimes she could even see the impression of where he sat left on the sheets.
4. Smelling a Fragrance or Familiar Aroma
When your loved ones pass on, smell becomes part of their personality and spirit. If you ever had a familiar smell come out of thin air it could have been a loved one in spirit. You might smell your grandfather’s favorite cigar he always smoked when he was here, or randomly smelling your dads old spice cologne. These are real experiences that show you a loved one is nearby.
When I was growing up psychic, spirit would always visit me in this way of fragrance and smells. I would wake up to the smell of funeral flowers and then the voices of the departed would follow soon after.
You don’t have to be a psychic medium to get this sign. In fact, this is a very common way spirits use to reach you. I once read a man who was so confused about what he was experiencing. After his mom got sick, he moved in to take care of her in her final years of life. Each night she would cook amazing Italian meals from scratch. After she had passed away, he missed his mom and those memories of her cooking so much. Randomly one night after his Mom passed, he woke up to the smell of meatballs, pasta, and his moms Italian gravy! He went running into the kitchen dazed and confused. To his surprise, the kitchen was spotless but the smell was so strong! This was a sign from his Mom that she was using to remind him that she was still with him.
5. Spirit Orbs
When you sense and feel a spirit around you and need some proof or validation, take out your phone and turn on the camera! Sometimes when a spirit is near you, you may actually be able to capture them as an orb on camera. This isn’t actually what your loved ones look like, they look the same in Heaven as they did before they were sick here in this world. However, sometimes the camera lens can pick up and capture their spirit as an orb, blur, or distortion in the picture. This sometimes happens when families are together taking group pictures or on important days in your life. When this happens and an orb
appears, know that you just got photobombed by a spirit! Many parents have told me that they see orbs appear on their baby monitor systems. They orbs appear around the child and sometimes fly around the room. This is not to be feared. It’s just angels, guides and loved ones popping in for a visit.
6. Electronics Get Strange
Your loved ones are energy, which means when they are present, weird and strange things can start to happen. The TV might turn on by itself, the light might flicker, or the smoke detectors sound when there is no danger. This is not your loved one playing jokes, but rather an effect of spirit energy.
Remember that when your loved ones pass away they take an energy form. The spirit of your loved one is like an electromagnetic field. This is why electronics are often first effected. Don’t be scared, Instead ask who is with you, paying a visit.
7. Feeling Like You are Not Alone in an Empty Room
Just as you can tell when someone living is staring at you, the dead can make you feel the same way. Even though they are not physically here with you, their spiritual presence can be felt just the same as someone physically with you, watching you. You might feel a presence with you while you’re sitting on the couch or watching TV alone. Sometimes these feelings can bring other validations like floors creaking or something falling and crashing in the next room.
The spirits don’t mean to scare you! In fact, they don’t even realize that you can sense them. If you are feeling this sensation, try to figure out who might be visiting you and remember that spirits are the strongest during special times in life like birthdays.
8. Seeing a Specific Sign
Signs are the language that your loved ones In Spirit use to get your attention and communicate with you. Signs like dragonflies, butterflies , cardinals, repeating numbers, and familiar songs are all ways that your loved ones use to get your attention. These signs are special because they instantly trigger emotional memories, helping you feel close and connected to those you love and miss in spirit.
9. Hearing Your Name Being Called
As weird as it might sound, sometimes a spirit will call or yell out your name, and you are actually able to hear it clear as day. When I was kid this would freak me out! I remember one day I was alone playing in the basement, when I heard my Moms voice yell “Matthew!” I was scared I might be in trouble. I came running upstairs, only to find my Mom fast asleep on the couch and nobody else in the house.
When I shook my Mom awake to tell her what happened she wasn’t surprised. She said that sometimes spirits try to get our attention by calling out our name and using a voice of those we recognize. Her advice was to ask the spirits if there was a message they were trying to send and to wait to see what followed.
10. Waking Up in the Middle of the Night
Have you been waking up randomly at weird hours of the night? Have you noticed the time being 3:33 or 4:44? This is not a coincidence, but rather a spirit visit. 3:33 and 4:44 are known as the “visiting hour” amongst spirits. It is during this time that your loved ones come to check in on you. Sometimes they might even come and visit you in a dream. This type of sign usually occurs when a loved one first passes over and is trying to communicate.
Connecting Through A Psychic Medium
Remember that when a loved one passes away, it is not a permanent goodbye but rather just a change in world. One of the best things about being a medium is that moment when you see someone’s idea of death and the afterlife change after you deliver a message from a loved one in Heaven. As satisfying as that is, there’s nothing like a near death experience to change the way a person sees life, death, and just about everything else!
A near death experience (NDE) is an event in which someone comes close to dying without actually dying.
Near death experiences are often described as being very similar to out of body experiences, where the person’s soul leaves their body and then returns back with a whole new outlook on the afterlife.
During these experiences, people oftentimes will visit Heaven for a few short moments, meeting friends, family and sometimes even pets that died. They sometimes are explained the purpose of their life, foretold certain life events that would be happening, and then told that they must return back to their body.
A Life-Changing, Near-Death Experience
Recently I had the chance to meet Dr. Mary Neal from the Netflix Original Series “Surviving Death.”
In 1999, Dr Mary Neal, an orthopedic spine surgeon, had a near-death experience. She was pinned underwater, declared dead, and was then revived. For a few short moments she visited Heaven and now shares her story with the world.
Talking to Mary was so amazing! Many of the things she saw during those minutes when she was declared dead match up perfectly with what souls in Heaven have described to me – like the life review. The only difference is that Mary experienced these events firsthand, and miraculously came back to tell us about it.
When It’s Not Your Time to Go
Near death experiences, especially ones where people die and come back to life are rare and miraculous. They remind us that we are here on this earth for a divine purpose and mission. If that mission has not been completed and it’s not our time to die, it’s possible that we will be sent back to Earth to continue our journey.
During these near-death experiences, people’s lives can be forever changed. I’ve had done some amazing readings and had some fascinating conversations about the topic, here’s what I have learned during some of my readings:
Unlocking Psychic Gifts:
One woman I met was in a horrific car accident and was thought to have died. Miraculously she recovered – but she wasn’t the same. She was suddenly a psychic medium. She woke up from her coma and was shocked that she was able to see, hear, and sense the departed. She came to me for a reading and some advice. She didn’t know how this was possible! I knew exactly what had happened. The experience brought her so close to Heaven that even when she awakened from her coma, she maintained a stronger spiritual connection that most.
A New Outlook On Life:
I remember a reading I did for a man who was an absolute skeptic and did not believe in Heaven or the afterlife. After suffering a major heart attack, he was clinically dead for 30 mins but was brought back to life with a whole new perspective.
He had the proof he needed to believe that Heaven was real. While the doctors were working to revive him, he visited Heaven for a few short moments and saw his family that had passed on. They had some important things to tell him.
They urged him to come back to Earth, get closer to God and start believing in Heaven. They also told him that he needed to become a better person. He had been an alcoholic and hadn’t been good to the people in his life. But that all changed after he spent a few minutes in Heaven. He realized he still had some growing to do spiritually, and some lessons to learn, and he was determined to make the most of his second chance.
He learned to cherish relationships deeper, set goals, spread kindness and open his heart.
Close To Death – But Not There…
One more thing! It’s important to understand that not everyone who has a near death experience visits Heaven. There would be a lot more of these stories if that were the case.
For example, I knew a woman who had suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the abdomen, she was extremely close to death but not close enough to have the experience of visiting Heaven.
When she asked me about the experience and why she never saw Heaven, I saw a vision. The spirit world showed me it was because she had never left her body. Spirit tells me that near death experiences only happen when our soul exits our physical body and start to transition into Heaven.
A Visit with a Purpose
I was so honored to meet and speak with Dr. Mary Neal, and I left with confirmation of something I’ve always felt. Any encounter we have with the other side, be it a sign from Heaven, a reading from a medium, or a near-death experience happens for a reason. The dead come through to me because there’s something important they want their loved one to understand, and from my conversations with those who have taken a round trip to the other side – they learned valuable lessons and never saw things the same way again.
One thing is certain, proof of the Heaven and the afterlife is all around us. The more we learn about Heaven the more that we our loved ones are right by our side and that our soul truly lives on even after death.

Okay, so I just realized something. As a medium, I’m accustomed to hearing people talk about how they wish they could see their loved one in spirit, or give them a hug, or do any of a million activities you’d normally engage in with a friend or family member. But they can’t, because the person has passed.
That’s why I love what I do!
It’s so gratifying to be able to help someone feel a little closer and more connected with their loved ones in Heaven. Not only do I bring through messages that provide healing and closure, but I also reassure the person that when they leave my event or hang up from our FaceTime session, their departed loved one will still be with them. They might not be able to have a cup of coffee and share a piece of cake, but they can still reach out and “feel” them. They just have to keep an open mind, and find different ways to connect.
Many people who have been in semi-isolation during Covid have been forced to find new ways to stay in touch with their living friends, extended family, and co-workers.
It took a while to get used to. At first the idea of having Thanksgiving in separate places and saying grace together over Zoom seemed insane! However, it worked! Families still laughed, shared holiday recipes, and told stories. Grandparents could FaceTime their grandchildren and send them gifts over Amazon.
Was video chatting with your loved ones exactly the same as being in the same room with them?
Not really. But the important part – the love and the memories that came through loud and clear. As the pandemic went on, longer than most of us expected, we got better and better at staying connected without actually being together. We got creative! There were Zoom book clubs, and FaceTime happy hours. At work there were virtual conferences and online office parties. People played chess, and watched movies together, virtually. A friend of mine just had an online baby shower, and she loved it!
Now back to connecting to the dead.
I’ve always said that souls in Heaven are energy, and I can connect to that energy and relay a message regardless of where everyone is. People have been loving my Live Online Group Reading Events just as much as they loved my in-person events. The audience still feels the same closeness with spirit, and everyone gets just as excited and emotional when a reading hits home with the person receiving it.
I guess all this has taught us that love endures.
And as powerful as my online events are, when you attend one, you leave with a lasting benefit. My events open the door to a spirit connection you can carry with you every day – no medium needed.
All that’s required is that you be open to a different kind of connection than you had when your loved one was alive.
So, if you’re missing a friend or family member who has passed and would give anything to feel close to them again, here are some suggestions:
- Actively invite signs from heaven. You can start the day by having a silent conversation to your loved one and ask them to send you a sign. Don’t be afraid to get specific and ask for something that’s meaningful to both of you. Then pay attention and see what happens!
- Find something you enjoyed together, and invite the soul to join you. It doesn’t have to be anything too complicated. Watch a television show, listen to music, or take a walk. As you engage in the activity, keep your loved one in mind. Start a dialogue with them in your head, and be mindful of the thoughts and answers that come through.
- Set up a small space dedicated to your loved one. Maybe a section of your bookshelf, or a spot on your bedside table. Include a picture of the person, a piece of jewelry, or anything that makes you think of them. Whenever you glance at it, mentally say “hi!” This simple shrine will keep their memory alive, and help you feel close and connected.
- Talk about your loved ones with other people. Sharing stories and memories makes you feel close and is a healing way of staying connected.
- Allow yourself some quiet time when you can remember the loved ones who are no longer with you. You might want to say a little prayer or write about them in your journal. Doing so will let them know how grateful you are that they were a part of your life.
Now that we’ve all gotten used to connecting with our living friends and relatives in new ways, it might be easier to feel the presence of loved ones in Heaven. The love you share for the person who has passed is still there, just in a different form.

Growing up, I always heard that when you die, you’re reunited with your loved ones who passed before you. It was a comforting thought, but I remember wondering who exactly would be in that group. My best friend from third grade? Relatives who I didn’t even know? Pets? Would I get to pick who I hung out with in heaven?
As a medium, I’m considered an expert in the afterlife, and it turns out I’m not the only one who wonders about these things. People have a lot of questions, and I get it! Knowing that you will be together for eternity can make losing someone easier to handle, and it can make the whole idea of dying less frightening.
Love Keeps Us Connected
A common thing people ask is if they will be with friends, family, or adopted family in Heaven regardless if they are blood related. The answer is yes, Heaven is a place that reunites us – it doesn’t separate us.
As a medium, I’ve learned that souls come through based on how your HEART recognizes them and not your genetics. Stepfather, stepsister, adopted parent, foster parent, best friend, are convenient ways to describe our relationships but sometimes the heart creates a different, more authentic label based on how strong and deep the connection is.
I remember, I once read a woman whose father had been missing from her life. When she was just 3 years old her Mom remarried. The man who was technically her stepfather was a loving person who treated her like she was his own. In his heart, she was his daughter and he loved her unconditionally. Throughout her life, he was the only father she ever knew. She called him Dad, and nobody ever knew anything different. After he passed, she came to me for a reading, and his spirit came right through. She was so relieved because she had feared that he wouldn’t be there because they were not related by blood. He made sure she got the message that they were connected forever – by love. She broke down in tears knowing that he was still with her in spirit, and they would be together in Heaven.
A Soul Connection
People often don’t understand that an enduring soul connection has nothing to do with legality or bloodlines. I’ve known people who tragically lost a fiancée before their wedding who worried that they wouldn’t be reunited in Heaven because the marriage ceremony didn’t take place. People who have been married more than once are sometimes confused about who they will be with in the afterlife. Remember that in the afterlife, true soulmates always reunited and love always finds a way to keep us connected.
I’ve done readings for people who were adopted. That can get interesting!
Sometimes both their adoptive family and biological family members come through. It’s confusing because they have 4 sides of their family instead of two and they may know nothing about their birth parents. However, I have found that most times it is the adopted family that has the strongest presence in readings. They are the ones that shared memories, love and a deep connection with that child, and that is what matters most.
Pets Become Family
Then there are pets. Even though they are not the same species, and are not ” born into our family” they become family because of the love and connection that we share with them. It can be hard to lose a pet you love, especially when their lives seem so short compared to ours – but they are watching over you in life, and will be waiting to lead you across the tunnel of light to the other side.
Heaven is not a place that looks for marriage certificates or DNA samples. You will be with anyone you loved in Heaven.
So, when people ask me questions about being reunited with loved ones in heaven, I always tell them the same thing, “Love is thicker than water – if you’re not sure who you will spend eternity with, your heart knows the answer!”

Do Souls Age In Heaven?
A friend of mine was celebrating a birthday the other day and asked me, “Do we keep getting older in Heaven?” I had to laugh. The answer is No. There is no one is spirit that looks to be 167 years old, thank God! Can you imagine?
Actually, there would be souls who were thousands of years old. What would that even look like? But still, it’s a question that many people ask me.
The Meaning Of Time.
We celebrate birthdays to mark the passage of time. Time has an important meaning to us, so we mark years, anniversaries, birthdays – all the milestones that matter here on Earth. It doesn’t really work the same way in Heaven. Spirit is infinite and forever, not limited by time – so a year is like a drop of water in an infinite sea. So with that in mind, it makes sense that birthdays and things like that don’t have the same type of importance they do in the physical world. They are important as moments when we feel especially connected to those we love, but not because they mark a specific amount of time.
In Heaven, we are all pure energy that reflects our deepest, truest being. People take spirit forms that are a reflection of their best selves. That spirit form might reflect any age. What’s most important is that is a manifestation of the soul.
Your loved ones in Heaven appear as an image of themselves that best reflects them when they were free of illness when they were healthy and living their best life. For example, a person who was on life support for 12 years may choose to be 12 years younger in Heaven. Sometimes souls who have passed from Alzheimer’s or suffered for many years with an illness will choose to reflect who they were before they had the disease.
What about when couples pass away years apart?
When husbands and wives pass away years apart, sometimes they will choose to come through at an age that reflects when they were happiest together. And the one who passes first will wait for the other to join him at that age. This happens by leaving their physical appearance behind and taking spirit forms.
When children pass, they do not “age” in Heaven. They watch over their parents and family until one day they are reunited with their loved ones and can resume those connections. People who spent years of their lives depressed or anxious may come through as a reflection of their wilder, happier, younger days. Some people may choose to reflect their older, wiser selves, especially if they were happy and healthy in their later years.
Because I talk about Spirit as a reflection, sometimes people wonder if I mean they are just air or something. It’s not like that. When I see Spirit, I see a vision of the person when they were their happiest. I don’t see air. I see the true soul self. Spirit is a reflection of the love in a person’s heart as well as their physical appearance.
Heaven is a reunion.
I am writing this blog because when you think about reuniting with loved ones in Heaven I want you to focus on what is important. The fact that you might pass 20 years after your husband won’t make a bit of difference when the time comes. If you are soul-mates, you will be a perfect match on the other side.
Your loved ones in Heaven do not want you to worry about what they will look like or the age gap between you. They just want you to know that they are in Heaven watching over you and supporting you. Their life journey is complete, but once you reunite, you will catch up and resume connection in the afterlife with those you love.
