“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.
It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.”
― John Grogan, Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World’s Worst Dog
Pets are such a great way to experience unconditional love. If you’ve been on my Instagram account, you’ve seen my three Bengal Cats. Bengals are like a cross between wild cats and house cats, and as soon as I became aware of this breed, I knew I had to have one (or three) because they’re smart, exotically beautiful and so, so, loving! Our kitties bring Alexa and I tons of joy, and I hope we have them with us for many years to come.
Cats, dogs, and most pets (with the exception of certain birds and tortoises) don’t live as long as humans – but that’s one of the priceless lessons they teach. We have to cherish and appreciate them while they’re here, since their time on earth is so short.
People often ask me where souls of our pets go when they die, and if they can look forward to being reunited with their four legged friends in heaven. I know the answer – since often, when I’m hosting a group reading, the spirits of pets show up to give a sniff or a tail wag to their human families. They’re usually in the company of family members and other pets who have crossed over.
When cats, dogs, horses and other pets come through to me, they bring with them a powerful love energy. Their messages are overwhelmingly positive, and they usually want me to remind their owners of cherished time spent together taking long walks, cuddling on the couch, and sitting by the fire. They want to share that they’re happy, healthy and free, running and playing in heavenly fields. Best of all, they love to show me images of their spirit beings still curled up in their old, favorite places in the family home – and hearing that gives so much comfort to the people who miss them!
If you’re mourning the loss of a beloved pet, here are some insights that might bring you comfort:
Don’t feel guilty. Animals remember the good times and forgive everything else. The love and care you gave to your pet throughout their life is what they carry with them to the Spirit realm. If you had to make the hard choice to end their suffering, they understand that you did it to stop their pain.
It’s okay to “love again.” Pets who have passed on don’t resent their replacements. In fact, often they will drop in Spirit form to give your new friend some instructions! They are happy in Heaven, and they want you to be happy and protected too.
They send you signs from the other side. If you still sense your departed pet around you, you’re probably right! Pets often make themselves known while you’re in a relaxed or dreamlike state – so if you feel a whisker across your face or a warm sensation at your feet while you’re in bed, it’s not your imagination. Your pet is making their presence known.
Your pet wants you to heal. The best way to recover from any loss is to share compassion and kindness with others. Learn from your pet’s example and love unconditionally.
All souls on the other side, wait for the day when they will be reunited with their earth families. Learn a lesson from your pets and cherish the time you have with your loved ones – two legged and four legged! Every day is precious.
