“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.
It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.”
― John Grogan, Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World’s Worst Dog
Pets are such a great way to experience unconditional love. If you’ve been on my Instagram account, you’ve seen my three Bengal Cats. Bengals are like a cross between wild cats and house cats, and as soon as I became aware of this breed, I knew I had to have one (or three) because they’re smart, exotically beautiful and so, so, loving! Our kitties bring Alexa and I tons of joy, and I hope we have them with us for many years to come.
Cats, dogs, and most pets (with the exception of certain birds and tortoises) don’t live as long as humans – but that’s one of the priceless lessons they teach. We have to cherish and appreciate them while they’re here, since their time on earth is so short.
People often ask me where souls of our pets go when they die, and if they can look forward to being reunited with their four legged friends in heaven. I know the answer – since often, when I’m hosting a group reading, the spirits of pets show up to give a sniff or a tail wag to their human families. They’re usually in the company of family members and other pets who have crossed over.
When cats, dogs, horses and other pets come through to me, they bring with them a powerful love energy. Their messages are overwhelmingly positive, and they usually want me to remind their owners of cherished time spent together taking long walks, cuddling on the couch, and sitting by the fire. They want to share that they’re happy, healthy and free, running and playing in heavenly fields. Best of all, they love to show me images of their spirit beings still curled up in their old, favorite places in the family home – and hearing that gives so much comfort to the people who miss them!
If you’re mourning the loss of a beloved pet, here are some insights that might bring you comfort:
Don’t feel guilty. Animals remember the good times and forgive everything else. The love and care you gave to your pet throughout their life is what they carry with them to the Spirit realm. If you had to make the hard choice to end their suffering, they understand that you did it to stop their pain.
It’s okay to “love again.” Pets who have passed on don’t resent their replacements. In fact, often they will drop in Spirit form to give your new friend some instructions! They are happy in Heaven, and they want you to be happy and protected too.
They send you signs from the other side. If you still sense your departed pet around you, you’re probably right! Pets often make themselves known while you’re in a relaxed or dreamlike state – so if you feel a whisker across your face or a warm sensation at your feet while you’re in bed, it’s not your imagination. Your pet is making their presence known.
Your pet wants you to heal. The best way to recover from any loss is to share compassion and kindness with others. Learn from your pet’s example and love unconditionally.
All souls on the other side, wait for the day when they will be reunited with their earth families. Learn a lesson from your pets and cherish the time you have with your loved ones – two legged and four legged! Every day is precious.

Dear Matt,
I thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for this article about if our loving pets go to heaven, because this has weigh me down a lot, because I search the bible to find that question if they are up in heaven, and I didn’t find my answer, so thank you so much for that. I miss my pets so much and it was hard to think I would never be with them again. So now I know they are up there with my beloved parents and happy. Bless you for this.
Sandy
Thank you so much for this article Matt. We lost our precious Bear (male German Shepherd ) to a heart condition we didn’t even know he had until just days before. He was only 7 1/2. He came into our lives shortly after we lost our son and brought us great joy when we really needed it. He always made us smile. I miss him so, so much?
I am sitting here reading this with tears in my eyes. Thank you for giving me this comfort. Just knowing I will see my precious animals again fills my heart. I always envisioned them sitting at my Nan’s feet waiting to say hello again.
Thanks got that information. We never know when the right time is to get another pet. We always feel as though we are replacing or more importantly that we will forget the other pet. So sad when they go. It leaves a hole in your heart that, for us, can never be healed.
Reading this on the anniversary of my sweet German Shepherd Abby’s passing meant so much to me-it truly was a message from Heaven. Abby was my heart dog-she came from a wonderful rescue organization with a history of being dumped at a kill shelter in the South after having outlived her usefulness as a puppy mill breeder but when I looked into her eyes, I knew we were meant to be together. Sadly, we only had a few years together but they were good years, we showed Abby & Baron, the other Shepherd we adopted along with her, the life they were meant to live. In a cruel twist of fate, Baron became ill & passed 9 months to the day after Abby. The two of them loved us & each other unconditionally as we loved them. I still feel Abby & my other passed dogs around me at times & think my current dogs may also-it’s true that love never dies, especially a love as pure as theirs
So comforting to know we will be greeted by family, friends, and pets too. No fear.
Who is Alexa you just mentioned?
Thank you. We had to put our little 11yr old cat Aeris to rest last week. Yes we have felt her spirit.
Thank u Matt we are grieving our beloved Indy. I am struggling with his loss and the unspeakable bond we had. The day he passed incredible communication but since then not so much. I miss him so much and need to feel him around me again. I would love a reading if possible. Thank you
How do we get a pet reading
I often wondered if their spirit is still around. I miss my two English Springers . We had and nursed them for nearly 16 years. We have now fostered and now adopted a dog. Hope they don’t mind
That is a comforting thought. That the love we shared with our pets will once again be reunited.
When my dog passed, my 3 yr old daughter and I are sitting on the bed when we “heard” Odie come down the hall into the bed room. She turned to me and said, “Was that Odie?” I told her “Yes, he was just stopping by to make sure we were okay before he went on to heaven.” My children, 3 and 6, for months later claimed Odie was in the car
with us.
It is reassuring to have Matt tell us that ‘all good dogs go to heaven.’
Wow. What timing. We just had to have our golden retriever, Suzie put down. She was very special to us and it is so hard to do. A couple of funny things happened after we lost her. The first night my mother actually felt her jump on the bed! A couple days later my mother and I were on our way to the mall and my mother was telling me that my father won’t eat bananas anymore because Suzie isn’t there to get her piece. We parked the car at the mall and got out and there right by our car on the ground was a banana peel!! I think Suzie was telling us to let my father know it’s ok to eat bananas again!! Hope she keeps giving us signs from heaven.
Thankyou my cat Lillee past away night before last.He had cancer and I had been treating him holistically because I didn t want him to suffer through all of the prodding and chemicals from the vets.He had looked quite comfortable ,lying in the sun etc, eating lots but he started dying late in the night.Too late for a vet.I gave him rescue remedy and burnt lavender oil but he was struggling to breathe until he passed 3 hours later.I felt so bad watching him in pain and felt helpless. ?
That was a great blog ! I say how wonderful it will be to see my departed pets again ! I also have a Bengal and the same thing happened to me when I saw the breed I had to have one! They are beautiful and so expressive emotionally, at least my guy is! Well enjoy your cats and I will enjoy my crew! Was at your Marlboro show and my daughter and I really enjoyed it, thanks for your work!
Matt it seems every message you send is what I need to hear at that exact moment. Then I think, “Wow!! What a coincidence!” Then I think, “No…Matt said it’s not a coincidence.” Lol.
So thank you dearest Matt. You have brought my family and me so much joy and peace. We’ve been through so much in the last several years. But because I am such an incredibly strong believer in your gift and messages, I’m not so grief stricken because I know I will see them again. I lost my sister Cindy who was my best friend and a year later I lost my mom. In the last two months I lost my father in law and my sister in law.
We met you in Marlboro MA and my sister Cindy came through to us and her daughter Julia. I bought Julia the ticket for her graduation gift and it was you that ended up giving her the best gift of all. A message from her mom.
We all love you Matt!! Thank you ?
Hi.

Ah, Matt, such impeccable timing and synchronicity. I very recently lost a little dog who had become my soul companion, and losing Cooper at the age of 5 was almost unbearable, and I am still grieving his loss. I am so angry at the universe for taking him so suddenly…and I do hope all my lovely companions are there to greet me when it is my time, because, if they are not, then I’m not going…
I know what you say is true as having lost my son a year ago I had an experience with a medium and my son’s spirit came through. The medium did not know who I was looking to hear from but his comments to me made it clear it was my son’s.’s spirits prescience. I asked who met him once he passed and the visuals of our 3 dogs came through first the yello lab .. then the black lab and then the little white Lhasa Pookey was in my son’s arms . So they were the ones to greet him on the other side and he and they are together. Then my Mom and Dad and Aunt came through as they too are in the company of my son. It is such a relief to know they are together in Love . Thank -you for all the good you do Matt!
Matt I lost my fur baby in 2011 ! I didn’t know if I was going to make it without her and I felt like I couldn’t go on with life without her !! I miss her dearly! Now I have a another one almost just like her ! I would love to that my sweet Daisy is around me .
Thanks
Marissa Davis
Yes our loving pets do go up to heaven. I have seen them playing with my dog.
Thank you Matt. I guess it is safe to say that I will have a farm in heaven!
I dont comment on anything, I usually just read whatever is posted but Matt your truly a gift from heaven. Thanks for this article. I cant imagine how many hearts you help heal. God bless. Thank you.
Hi Matt,
losing our rescue dogs is always hard. Some we only get a couple years with (we rescue the seniors) .We have lost 2 in the last couple years. The latest just months ago.
We tried everything, including having special wheels made for her (Cancer in one leg crossed up an over into spine and other leg..so they dragged )It was sadly too late, she had no more energy left in her to use those wheels. She (Diamond Lily) was only with us a year, but she taught us so much. Your article on Do Pets Go to Heaven, was comforting.
You are truly blessed. It must feel so good to help so many people suffering loss. I can’t imagine being able to help so many…such a wonderful gift. God Bless you ~

This blog just absolutely made my day! I miss my furry baby girl everyday, and I swear she gave our new rescue boy some tips!! Thank you!
Wonderful post Matt! If only humans could treat other humans the way pets treat their “humans” there would be so much peace and love in the world!
I lost our furbaby 27th Feb age 15yrs old. I miss her every single DAY. I had to call the vet out to end her life ?. I have her ashes and can’t wait to see her again in spirt. Thank you so very much Matt for this article. JUST wish you were in the U.K. England.
I sure hope you’re right. I have lost quite a few pets over the years. All I have is good memories of the love and life we shared. My husband, mom and dad all better be waiting for me! I enjoy your words of comfort.
beautiful
Most definitely they will greet us and are wat hung over us. Our beloved Min Pin of 14 years passed and a week later I was so sad and asked her to please give me a sign that she was OK. I looked down and there by my foot was a heart shaped rock. That was never there before as I walk there daily.
Thank you so much for this. I have lost 3 dogs the last one on 6-24-17. My heart was broken and still is. I also lost one of my cats I adopted when he was 13 a few weeks ago. I had him for 4 years but it seemed like a lifetime. I talk to all of them every night. I’m convinced now they can hear me and feel my never ending love. Thank you Matt! I’ve seen you a few times and you’re amazing! You help so many people! I tell everyone I know about all the people I’ve seen you help (myself included!)Thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do!! ?❤️
Thankful Matt.
Thank you so much, you always make me feel better.
This message couldn’t have come at a better time. I just had to make the decision to put my dog down. Feeling very emotional. Thanks Matt for your healing words.
I am so happy I read this tonight. I recently had to put our beloved cocker spaniel to sleep. He was suffering terribly from seizures and cancer. I felt bad but felt it was the right thing to do for him. It was difficult. I believe in the spiritual world but worried about not letting it happen naturally. Thank you for making me feel at ease. We all miss him, our other dog misses him too. I know he is free and happy. I know I will see him again.
Many blessings to you for sharing your gift with the world. I am grateful!
Lynn
What about the rainbow bridge?
This message is so healing, we’ve lost a few very special family members and I still speak to them daily and tell them that I love them and always will. We never had human children buy our dogs are our children. Thank you for the loving messages you send. You’re very special and it’s kind of you to bring people the peace they really need.
Bless you.
My Son lost a Teacup Chiwawa last year! Koco! He was 5 years old! Had a Stroke! Well! Five weeks ago he lost his Sister Bella! She was 4 years old! Had spinal injury and couldn’t walk and Surgery would have cost $5-6000 ! It’s so sad! Looking for another Chiwawa!
