Before we dive into psychic dreams, let’s talk about what dreams actually are and why your brain creates them every single night.
The Science of Dreams
Dreams happen during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, when your brain is almost as active as when you’re awake. Scientists have discovered that dreaming serves several important purposes for your mental and emotional health.
Your brain uses dreams to process and consolidate memories from the day, moving important information from short-term to long-term memory storage. It’s like your mind’s filing system, deciding what to keep, what to discard, and where to store everything you’ve experienced.
Dreams also help you work through emotions and problems. Ever notice how you sometimes wake up with a solution to something that was bothering you? That’s your subconscious mind using dream time to process complex feelings and situations, often through symbolic imagery that represents your real-life concerns.
Research shows that dreams can help with learning, emotional regulation, and even creative problem-solving. Your brain is essentially doing maintenance work while you sleep, organizing thoughts and feelings in ways that help you function better when you’re awake.
Most dreams pull from recent experiences, current concerns, people you’ve interacted with, or things you’ve been thinking about. They’re usually a jumbled mix of memories, emotions, and random neural firing that your brain tries to organize into some kind of narrative.
When Dreams Become Something More
But then there are dreams that don’t fit this scientific model. Dreams that contain information you couldn’t have processed from daily experience because you never had access to that information in the first place.
I’ve had psychic dreams since childhood – dreams about people getting sick before they showed symptoms, dreams about events that later happened exactly as I saw them, dreams where I received information I had no way of knowing through normal means.
These dreams feel completely different from the memory-processing dreams that science explains so well. They’re vivid, urgent, and they stick with you in ways that regular dreams don’t.
A Dream That Felt Different
I’ll never forget the dream that made me understand there was something unique happening. I was maybe twelve years old when I had this incredibly vivid dream about being in a place I’d never been – a small restaurant with red booths and a jukebox in the corner. In the dream, I was sitting across from an older man with kind eyes who kept saying “Tell them about the roses.”
The dream felt completely different from my usual dreams. Everything was crystal clear – I could smell the coffee, hear the specific songs on the jukebox, even feel the texture of the red vinyl seats. When I woke up, instead of the dream fading like they usually do, every detail stayed sharp in my memory.
The weird part was, I had no idea who this man was or what the message about roses meant. It wasn’t connected to anything in my daily life, any recent experiences, or anyone I knew. But the dream felt so important, so urgent, that I couldn’t shake the feeling it meant something.
This wasn’t my brain processing daily experiences or working through emotions. This felt like information coming from somewhere else entirely.
The Difference Between Processing and Receiving
Regular dreams are your brain talking to itself, working through information you’ve already absorbed. Psychic dreams feel like your consciousness is receiving information from an external source.
Real psychic dreams usually:
- Contain specific details that later prove accurate
- Feel more vivid and clear than regular dreams
- Are remembered in detail even years later
- Include information you couldn’t have guessed or known
- Often come true within days, weeks, or months
They also tend to be about things you weren’t already thinking about or worried about. If you’re constantly anxious about your health, dreaming about getting sick probably isn’t psychic. But if you never worry about earthquakes and dream about one happening in a specific location, that might be worth noting.
Spirit Visitation Dreams: A Different Category
Sometimes deceased loved ones visit us in dreams, but this isn’t the same as psychic dreaming. Spirit visitation dreams are about communication from those who’ve passed, while psychic dreams are about receiving information about living people or future events.
When a deceased loved one visits in a dream, they usually appear healthy and at peace, give you a message or comfort about their passing, and leave you with a sense of their presence upon waking. These often happen during significant times like anniversaries, holidays, or major life events.
The Reality Check
Most people who think they have psychic dreams are actually having anxiety dreams or processing subconscious information they’ve already picked up. Science can explain the vast majority of dreams through normal brain function and memory processing.
True psychic dreams are relatively rare.
The only way to know if a dream was psychic is if the information proves accurate and specific enough that coincidence becomes unlikely. Keep a dream journal and note which dreams contain verifiable details, but be honest about what can be explained through normal psychological processes versus what truly seems to come from beyond ordinary experience.
Most of my spiritual communication happens when I’m awake and consciously connecting. Dreams are just one possible channel, and not the most reliable one for consistent psychic or mediumistic work.
Understanding the science of regular dreaming helps you distinguish between your brain’s natural processing functions and those instances when something more mysterious might be happening.

I had a very specific dream, but my Mom was in it, she had passed away already. I entered a hospital room where my Dad was lying in the bed and my Mom was standing next to the bed. I walked in and sat down, he was not awake, and held his hand and looked up at my Mom and asked if he was going to die. She said soon, very soon. I started crying and when I looked up again she was gone. About a week later I received a phone call from my brother telling me that Dad was in hospice and while he was still able to talk and eat, I should come home. I left and spent about 5 days with him. I went back to where I live and 3 days later he was gone.

Hi Matt. I was just reading the email you sent about dreams. I wanted to share a dream that I had a few years back. I had a very good friend who lived in Tennessee that I had known since high school. We found each other online & talked all the time including phone calls. I had a dream early one morning that he was trying to call me. I woke up & shortly after I found out that he had passed away the night before. I was completely shocked & devastated. Do you think that was a psychic dream?

Yes! When I was younger I dreamed a lot about my clients. I used to feel walking in a church that the people who passed were reaching out. At times it upset me so I didn’t want to go in a church.
I heard caffeine would dimension the ability. I started drinking coffee. It dulled the ability. I still dream a lot about people on the otherside my
Loved ones friends animals. At times I feel the weight of the dreams heavy on me during the day. Like I can’t get past it.

My daughter passed in 2020 and my mother passed in 2021. On the eve of my mother’s funeral I had a vivid dream of my daughter. She had returned after being away for a long time and we hugged one another for a long time. The dream seemed to go on for most of the night. When I woke up I felt this deep peace and I knew I could get through the day. I rarely dream of Jennifer and I feel she visited me to console me. I had that dream in 2021 and I still remember parts of that dream.
Wow, did this resonate! I’ve only had three dreams in my life that were very different than others and included people that had passed. The dreams were very vivid in color, high clarity and I remember smells and every detail of them. They end abruptly and there’s usually a clap or loud bang and I feel as though I’m being pushed out. I’ve had 3 dreams that predicted people’s death, with each one getting more detail and vivid. First was my mom.. but I chalked it up to being a strange dream I had being pregnant. 3 months later she got sick and died. Years later my about my dad who had Alzheimer’s and I saw him at an airport with his deceased parents standing behind him along with my other grandmother (named Dorothy)…week later spoke to my sister about him moving into another facility and her contacts name was Dorothy…he passed away 3 months later. The third one was of a friends brother and I dreamt about his funeral in detail including who I talked to and who I noticed wasn’t there. I had no idea he had been sick and 3 months later he passed away. I’ve had others recently thankfully not about dying. So as you can imagine I pay very close attention to my dreams
Hi Matt! I had a dream that was as good as it gets! My friend (Tom Petty) had just died, of course we were all upset and calling our friends to give the terrible news to them. He was on my mind all day. That night I had the best dream I ever had. The dream, I was sitting on a bench, like one in a park, when all of a sudden Tom came flying in and sat down beside me. Of course I was so surprised I almost couldn’t talk. He put his arm around my shoulder and gave me a kiss on the cheek and said I can’t stay I have lots of people I have to get to to say goodbye! At that we looked at each other and off he flew! It was so funny how he just flew through the air, I saw his whole body zooming in then out! It was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I haven’t seen him again in my dreams but I would love another visit! This was in 2017 and I am still waiting on that next visit! We had known each other since the1970’s. It was kind of sad yet invigorating because when he flew off I waved at him while he was in the air and he waved back. All of this was so fast it couldn’t have been more a few minutes if that! It wasn’t a dream to me it really happened. I don’t tell many people about it. I keep it to myself. So, now you know what Tom was doing after he died, he was out visiting all his friends saying goodbye! 😃
I am waking at 3:00 am sharp almost every night. When I do there are thoughts about death and people who have passed that I feel their presence. I often lay awake for a hour or more listening and praying. Any idea why I am doing this?
I had had a wonderful dream about my parents a about 3 yrs ago seated in the front seat of car that brought me backstage. 1970s. They were both smiling gently. A d even though my Mom was wearing a white blouse with ta 2009 frilly collar: they were parked in the driveway of their previous in town house where I group. It had been approx 38 yrs they had moved from there. The white blouse was what my Mom is in a photo with my Dad, me & my siblings the llast Easter & mine+my parents’ birthdays were celebrated altogether. You see, my Dad had cancer & that Spring when I visited them I was in kicmthenwithMo & heard a thump. Dad was holding onto side of his office doorway & was falling to the floor because his. legs were giving out. It was prostate cancer. I did my best topik him up & he paramedics come. Eventually after 64 1/2-yrs of marriage, Dad bc of health hadto nmgo into a residence. So they sold that house. My Dad went thru dialysis 3Xs a Wk. He was bruised & purply blue on his arms but he never complained. Just said: “No jn getting old”. Imagine after decades of marriage, having to. move his wife who he calle his Angel & handover their house ket+his car keys & he loved driving. My Dad actually boyh my parents were the best!! I had a dream about my late mother talking to me about my coworker. Funny part is that she knew him by name. Said he was a nice guy but could be a pain the ass at times. Totally funny but true. So, you just never know who will visit you in your dreams. Btw, his name is Chris and I told him this story
I have has dreams about tornadoes and a few days later there were tornadoes. I also have had a dream about a house a few doors down from me that burnt and there were a lot of fire trucks, ambulances, police cars there in my dream. Then a week or two later the house did burn.
My mom passed a year ago in Aug and I had never had a dream about her until this week. She was younger, she said she was 41. She was 77 when she passed. She looked beautiful, she was glowing like she had on sparkling makeup is the best I can describe it. She told me not to worry about anything. She touched her elbow then said “ I have to go” and then she came up and gave me the biggest hug and told me she loved me. My father was also in my dream, he recently passed in July. My parents were divorced. He was 88 and died from breathing issues. He looked younger too and he looked very good. In my dream he told me I could go if I needed to and I told him I would stay with him for a little bit longer. When I woke up I knew that that was more than a dream I know it was my parents coming to visit me and let me know they are ok.

Hi Matt. This is a great article. I have had many spirit visitation dreams with my brother who passed in 2016. They felt so real like he was actually here. I know in each dream I asked him “Eric is it really you? Are you here?” And always a yes. Once in my dream I walked into my mom’s house and he was waiting for me in the hall. I cried. We talked and hugged and I felt him. I asked if he was really here or was it a dream. Always said Im here. Then he melted into the background. Have had so many experiences where I knew he was here its unreal. One time he visited and at the end of visit he drve off in a red sportscar convertible. One time I had no blankets cause hot. But I felt someone cover me and when woke saw him standing there. I have rec’d at least 100 dimes in odd locations and I know its him. One time I had a garage sale and when moved my wagon back into garage I left for a moment and when came back there were about 30 dimes in a triple semi circle in front of the wagon! One time I went to clean my garage and there dimes everywhere! Have had umpteen times when dimes recd. Was going on a trip. Cleaned my car first. Stopped for coffee and when got back in car a dime in the coffee holder. Another time I put my suitcase in car. Went to say good bye to a friend and when came back to car a dime on my suitcase. They have showed up so many times. I have been told I have a thin veil and able to recieve from the other side by various mediums I have connected with. Blows me away! Good evening Matt, I believe that I get visions while I sleep. Some are probably not visions, however, I have been told that I have a gift. I have very vivid dreams. I agree, some are just dreams, and others I consider visions where information needs to passed on. I have always had these as far as I can remember, however, I am looking into this more and I’m not sure how to tap into them more. Do you think you can give me some ideas of how to do this?
This is helpful. Most of my dreams are just dreams I feel that. Some are so vivid and color, smell, taste, feeling seeing roads, documents, people, places I have never been to, so it’s things I will not discuss. so I feel it emotionally touching my whole system body and energy. It’s hard to describe but I know when I get a vivid dream or a waking flash I know it’s suppose to be something but what? Some things I just knew and don’t know where it came from. I have some missing journals and many personal items that I can not replace along with other things are all gone now. I even reported it to police. I have had some break ins to my home of late. Now have security system. I’m not mentally ill, I’m not on drugs, not crazy, or hallucinating or delusional. I told the police what weird event happened and described it several times and spoke to a detective and it’s unsolved and I get that but I saw what I saw. Now lately when I try to purchase a ticket it goes through and then on day of reading somehow my phone will not work with your system when it’s worked before. So maybe my gardian angel and spirit guide is blocking me from the online readings it’s happened about 4 times in a three year time frame. Other times I was there online but my hand would not stay raised or be found to click on it So don’t know what to think so I stopped buying tickets. I had a dream that repeated itself for mos and yrs. It turned out to be a warning to me of something that was going to happen to me and until it happened I didn’t understand it. I have had dreams that saved my daughter from a rape and it was clear who the rapist would be and how he was going to approach her. When I told her this dream she kept it in the back of her mind and the events actually happened as I told her it would according to the dream. She knew when he showed up at her apartment what his intentions were and she wouldn’t let him in and he tried to kick down her door. She called the law and then she called me to tell me it happened. I have had other dreams about things that was going to happend and was able to stop the event before it happened because of my dream. I have never thought of them to be physic dreams. I don’t have these dreams often but when I do have one that is so vivid that I cannot forget it and it lingers on for days until I say or do something about it. I rarely remember dreaming at all on a regular basis then one night out of the blue I will have a real serious dream. Thanks for explaining the difference.
What if, a tragic event happened 2 years ago in your life, since then you haven’t dreamed? Well 3 dreams 2 felt like I told you so dreams (for lack of a betters) but the other one didn’t. In the dream they never said a word the hole time. But I got up to a knock on the door opening it saying omg your dead your dead how! I grabbed them pulling them in with my arms around the neck. But they never hugged me back. And it didn’t feel like I was asleep. It felt so real! Until… I let go and then it did we were inside the old house not the new one. but sitting in my van with 5 kids in South Carolina. the dream started in Missouri where I had just moved. They children were muffled. But there was sound. still they said nothing. I woke up and immediately started crying. No other dreams since. What might be the reason for this. I dream of dead people every night. I know it means something ,but I don’t know what. I even dream of people that past years ago that I forgot about them. My dreams are so real I feel I’m right there with them.

I had to have my Border Collie put to sleep middle of May this year. I prayed for him to come through in my dreams and he did!
He was happy, surrounded by light and communicated directly to me that he was happy and in a good place.
I later had a pet psychic do a reading, she said exactly that – he was happy with us and now happy where he is – I didn’t tell her I dreamt of him

My dreams. I dream about people I don’t know. People I’ve never seen. I dream about planes crashing, train wrecks. I dream about flying cofens. I don’t know how to spell the word. I’ve dreamt about my own funeral. I’ve dreamt about getting shot in the head. my dreams are all over the place.
I was on a cruise and was seated next to a couple I didnt know. The man had PSTD ad I am a trauma therapist. We bonded instantly and I was able to help him. His wife was adopted and I was an adoption specialist. I was able to help her. We talked for hours. I was able to help her. What are the chances I would be placed with these two people in pain. That night I had dream. I was standing in garden and man walked from behind me into my filed of view. He was dressed in all white. he stopped and turned to look right at me and smiled. Then he walked on. Was this a high five from a spirit guide? It felt very real not like a dream

Back in February of 2007 my husband was told he had lung cancer and he died November of 2007. Well February of 2008 my 4 year old grand daughter was sick and he mom was taking her to the doctor to see if she had strep throat and they morning of seeing the doctor I work up and called my daughter and told her to have the doctor do a pet scan or what ever I told her I think it is a BRAIN TUMOR . My grand daughter was born early and when my husband was alive we took care of her when mom had to go to work. And when I had to go to work he would take care of her.. And when the doctor did the test we found out it was a brain tumor and when they removed it was CANCER.. And that night at the CHILDREN’S HOSPTIAL the doctor asked why we was done there so soon and my daughter told him to ask me and I told him the story and he said my husband came to me that night and planted that in my head so we could save her. AND NOW SHE IS 21 AND CANCER FREE.. So yes I do believe in SPRITS DOING THINGS LIKE THAT ..
The timing of this article is uncanny. The day before you wrote this, I was visited by my parents in a dream. Mom passed in 2018, Dad just last November. I dreamed they were coming through the back door of our house one evening as I was in the kitchen looking for some thing in the cupboards. Dad came in first, looking a little healthier than he did when he passed, with a much younger version of Mom behind him. I said, “You’re here!” He come to me with a grin & gave me a BIG hug. I never see them speak to me in my dreams; I only hear them when my back or head is turned.

This is so weird that I got this in my email. When recently this has been happening a lot to me lately. Small things really. Was questioning what is was meaning and then this pops up in my email. A friend of mine said he was moving, and I dreamed about his wife that had passed away showing me money she had hid somewhere. And sure enough she really did hide money in the exact spot she showed me in the dream. Why she showed me I don’t know. The dream was so vivid. Then I had another dream someone I was waiting to contact me did. Just Small things. I’ve had this happen in the past like someone coming to me and waking me telling me something was wrong with my husband and to check on him while he was sleeping when he had his strokes in his sleep. But lately it’s been happening a lot and I don’t know why. Things are starting to randomly pop into my head when I’m awake now too. It’s freaking me out.
Matt- this is timely. I had a dream about my son recently which has stayed with me! I dreamed of seeing him in uniform and reaching his goal of being a firefighter, successfully! In my dream I recall thinking “Oh Mother Mary heard my prayer. She is showing me his success!”. I’m hoping this is the case! I read your email and thought I’d share. I did have a dream I know was proof my husband was on the other side. It happened near his birthday. He had passed at 64 in sept 2021. In January 2022 I dreamt he was holding a baby & smiling. I woke up at 1:40 am asking if it was boy or girl. I went back to sleep saying I won’t remember that. The next morning at 6:30 I sent out a text to my family. Whose pregnant? My kids were 37 &40. Found out my 40 year old daughter was, very unexpectedly. We believe that her daddy sent our newest angel. And papa held her first. That baby was born healthy & happy August 2022. Total proof for my family there is afterlife.
Matt I recently had a medium named James Higgins I was so excited and over welmbed I believe him cause he knew a song that was played at my beautiful sister funeral he ask for money for a email readingit took me month to finally book only to never receive it the things he was telling me nearly broke me and in the end he proved to be a scammer I was heart broken and felt horrible that I trusted him. Lots of things missing too.
My husbands mother whom I have never seen a picture of or my husband used to not talk about her came to me and was throwing pictures at me so fast. She showed me what she looked like, where they used to live, and the day that she gave my husband to his father before she passed. Next day I asked my husband if his mom was tall, short hair, and if they lived in a house that had a white iron gate around it and his eyes got wide and he asked me how do I know these things and I told him she showed me by throwing pictures at me. At first it scared the crap out of me but after it was some how calming and almost like a breath of fresh air, because it gave me a glimpse of his life when it was traumatic to him and made me understand why he is sometimes closed off and doesn’t talk about his parents. I also seen my mother and grandmother ( her mom) on the steps inside my house on my mother’s birthday. I also seen my whole family who has passed away that same night but they were like standing further back and in the air in a group! I was so emotional seeing them that I was literally crying. I could hear them all tell me they loved me and they have been watching me! I felt at peace knowing that they are all proud of me and they love and miss me.
I also have a visitor in my house that we moved in. His name is Charlie! He whispered it in my ear one day when I was watching tv. Charlie also likes to touch people! Charlie hits the side of my bed, touches my leg, and sometimes touches my granddaughter! I have cleansed my house and let Charlie know that he can stay as long as no one in my house gets hurt. I know my dogs also see him cause they stare at the corner of the wall or right up above my bed.

Since childhood I’ve had many: “Vivid psychic dreams, “waking visions”/warnings that have all come true (except for one I managed to avoid due to repeated warnings from Spirits, & those still to come for the future) and waking “Spirit visitations after prayers, and “Guardians appearing as bright white Lights the size and shape of people! But the most important for my soul purpose was that at 9 years old, after going through some child abuse, I ran away from home & prayed all day, outside in nature. While praying and holding a flower, its energy cried out that the Return of the Same Spirit of Christ had already occurred in the 1800:s! Since I was being sent to Catholic grade school, I wondered why no one at the church had mentioned this; and why neither my grandparents or parents knew of it? And what was His New Name that I had never heard? So I began to search & pray for this information, and read more from the Holy Books of all the religions of the world, which came from the Same One God! By the time I was a teenager, my longing & search to find the Return of this Promised One of all the religions became a consuming passion, until I found a time-line showing the dates of the last nine Manifestations from God, posted at an unmanned county fair booth for the Bahai World Faith! I picked up a flyer and went to an informal “fireside” discussion, and began to read some of the 100 Holy Books
revealed through the “Innate Knowledge of God” that were unmistakable to recognize that hasd streamed through Baha’ ‘u’ lla’h, ( Persian for “The Glory of God”).! I became a Follower and told my Catholic family, who promptly disowned me! Then, I went home and supplicated to God with intense tears & prayers for hours asking for a sign of proof if He was truly the RETURN.
In Answer, a large “Burning Flame of Fire” appeared hovering near the ceiling in my room at night with an Unmistakably “Powerful Presence” beyond anything I had ever felt before! And when I questioned how Its Burning Light was appearing so bright on that dark night; in answer to my mind… IT moved closer to me into the center of the room! In short, just as the apostles of Jesus had tongues of Fire appear over their heads at Pentecost three days after the crucifixion of Jesus; so too did I receive this outer sign for my confirmation! A few days later I came upon a Tablet of prayer, written by Baha’ ‘u’ lla’h, with His Words:
“Be thou as a flame of fire to my enemies, and a river of life eternal to my loved ones,
and be not of those who doubt ! “

My dreams are something that makes me hate myself even more, and I’m going to tell you why. I was 5 years old when I dreamed of my grandma coming over and falling down, and 3 hours later she passed away, when I told my parents about my dream, they thought I’m making things up but when at happens, they turned around and told me I am a curse and from that day on I never been loved by my parents or any family member. I dream about things that is going to happen and I hated because they come true, for example when I dream of my loved ones dying, I cry for 3 days but when they die I have no more tears left, or I dream of car accidents and yes 3 days later I got in the car accident and broke my nose too. I can go on and on and tell all the dreams that they come true. I pray to have a good night sleep with out dreams , but I weak up in the morning so tired that I feel I been run over by the bus.
I didn’t know any of that info. For example I dreamt about my older brothers death before it happened except in the dream I thought it was about myself. I’ve been going through a process of my “abilities” I think. It’s all been confusing and I I’ve got nobody to turn to for help understanding what exactly I am or what I can do ability wise. It’s pretty much been hell the past few years. Idk what to do anymore
My parents don’t visit. I go to them. Like, after my father died, I walked up to him, the light was sooooo bright. He was drawing at a desk. He was so young. He looked at me and ask me if I was dead. I told him no. There is no talking there. Just conscious speaking. I hear thoughts. When I saw my mom she was lying down and I saw someone else there. I lates with her and asked if I could stay. She she smiled and “said” no honey go live. She was so pretty and stress free. My psychic dreams come in flashes and I never forget them but when the moment comes. I know I have been there before. When I am awake I can see people, but they don’t say anything. I guess what I am saying is I have a gift I do not know how to use. It is not constant. I believe every word that comes out of your mouth. I have seen it. I have been there. There is something after this life and it is gorgeous. I always want to stay. I get pulled out and wake up.
