The people who observed Samhain understood that certain times carry different energy. The world was changing around them. The crops had been gathered, the days were growing shorter, and families were preparing for winter.
This transition was believed to make the boundary between the living and the spirit world more open. Ancestors could return. Messages could be received. The two worlds could touch.
Later, October 31 became known as All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day. The traditions changed over time, but the spiritual theme remained: this is a night to remember those who have passed away and honor the connection between life and the afterlife.
From my perspective, there are several reasons this night can feel so powerful.

Spirit responds strongly to thresholds. Birthdays, anniversaries, sunrise, sunset, and seasonal changes all carry a feeling of movement from one state into another.
Halloween Eve is a collective threshold. Millions of people are thinking about spirits, ancestors, the unseen world, and those who have passed away. That shared focus creates an opening.
2. People are more spiritually aware
On an ordinary day, you may be rushing from work to errands to dinner. Your mind is filled with noise.
On Halloween Eve, you may slow down. You may light a candle, visit a loved one’s grave, look through old photographs, or think about people you miss. That emotional openness makes it easier to notice what is already around you.
