I get this question all the time: “Matt, how do you choose who gets a reading at your live events?” And I totally understand why people ask. When you’re sitting in an audience and you’re hoping desperately to hear from a loved one who’s passed, it can feel like you’re waiting for the lottery numbers to be called.
But here’s what I need you to understand right from the start: I don’t choose who gets read. Spirit does.
Let me pull back the curtain and show you exactly how this process really works, because there are so many myths and misconceptions floating around that I want to set the record straight once and for all.
The Biggest Myth: It’s Random Selection
One of the most common myths I hear is that mediums just randomly pick people from the audience, or worse, that we somehow play favorites. I’ve heard people say things like “Oh, he only reads the people in the front row” or “He must have planted people in the audience.”
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
When I step onto that stage, whether it’s at the LIVE On Tour or doing one of my Online Group Readings, I’m not looking around thinking, “Hmm, who should I pick today?” Instead, I’m opening myself up as a channel and allowing spirit to work through me.
Think of it this way: I’m like a human telephone. When your phone rings, you don’t get to choose who’s on the other end of the line, do you? You pick up and see who called. That’s exactly how it works with spirit communication.
How Spirit Actually Chooses Who Gets Read
So if I’m not doing the choosing, how does spirit decide? There are three main factors that determine who receives a message during my events:
1. The Energy Connection
Spirit is drawn to specific energy signatures in the room. Sometimes it’s the person who’s grieving the deepest, sometimes it’s someone who’s been asking for a sign, and sometimes it’s the person who needs the message the least but whose reading will help heal others in the audience.
I remember doing a show in Boston where spirit kept pulling me to this woman in the back corner. She was sitting quietly, not trying to get my attention like some others were. But her father in spirit was so insistent about getting through to her. It turned out she was debating whether to keep the family business going after his passing, and he had very specific guidance about a decision she needed to make the next week.
The energy connection isn’t something you can fake or force. It’s a real, tangible pull that I feel in my body. Sometimes it’s like a magnetic draw to a particular section of the audience, other times I’ll suddenly get a name or a specific piece of information that belongs to someone.
2. The Urgency of the Message
Some spirits come through with what I call “urgent messages.” These are communications that have a time-sensitive element or address something critical happening in the person’s life right now.
During one of my online group readings earlier this year, I had a woman’s mother come through with information about a medical procedure her daughter was scheduled for the following week. The mother had very specific guidance about which doctor to choose and what questions to ask. That message couldn’t wait, it had to come through that night.
These urgent messages often take precedence because spirit knows that timing is everything. They’re not just trying to say hello; they’re trying to provide guidance, comfort, or crucial information that you need right now.
3. Divine Timing
Sometimes spirit chooses someone for a reading not because they’re asking for it the loudest, but because it’s simply their time to receive healing. I’ve seen people come to my events skeptical or just accompanying a friend, only to receive the most profound, life-changing reading.
There’s a divine orchestration at play that’s bigger than any of us can understand. Spirit sees the bigger picture. They know when you’re ready to receive their message, when your heart is open enough to truly hear what they need to tell you.
What About Online Group Readings?
You might be wondering if the selection process is different for my online group readings versus in-person events. The answer is no – spirit works exactly the same way whether we’re together in the same room or connecting through technology.
In fact, I’ve found that online group readings can sometimes be even more powerful because people are in the comfort of their own homes, surrounded by their loved one’s belongings and memories. This can actually strengthen the energy connection.

During my virtual sessions, I still feel that same magnetic pull to specific participants. I might see someone’s name on my screen and suddenly get a rush of information for them, or I’ll feel drawn to read someone who hasn’t even turned their camera on.
Debunking More Myths About Getting Chosen
Let me address some other misconceptions I hear frequently:
“Mediums only read people who look sad or emotional.”
Not true. While spirit is certainly drawn to those who are grieving, I’ve given profound readings to people who were laughing and joking just moments before. Sometimes the person who appears the most put-together is actually the one who needs the message most.
“You have to sit in the front to get read.”
Absolutely false. I’ve given readings to people in the very back row, people standing in the aisles, and people watching online from thousands of miles away. Spirit doesn’t care about physical proximity.
“If you don’t cry or react emotionally, you won’t get chosen.”
This is another myth. Some of my most evidential readings have been with people who are naturally more reserved or who process emotions differently. Spirit can work with any personality type.
How to Be Open to Receiving a Message
While you can’t control whether you’ll receive a reading, there are things you can do to be more open to spirit communication:
Come with an open heart and mind. Leave your skepticism at the door – not because I need you to believe in me, but because your loved ones in spirit need you to be receptive to their messages.
Don’t try to force it. I can always tell when someone is desperately trying to will a reading to happen. This kind of energy can actually create a barrier. Instead, come with gentle openness and trust that if you need a message, it will come.
Remember that you’re part of the collective healing. Even if you don’t receive a direct reading, witnessing other people’s readings can provide tremendous healing and validation for your own experiences with spirit.
Trust the timing. If you don’t receive a reading at one event, it doesn’t mean your loved ones aren’t around or don’t have messages for you. It might just mean it’s not the right time yet.
The Beautiful Truth About Spirit Communication
Here’s what I want you to remember: every single person who comes to one of my events or joins an online group reading is there for a reason. Spirit orchestrated your presence, whether you realize it or not.
Sometimes you’re there to receive a message. Sometimes you’re there to witness someone else’s healing so you can believe in the possibility of your own. And sometimes you’re there because your loved one in spirit wants you to know they’re around, even if they don’t come through directly that night.
I’ve had people tell me that they went to five of my shows before finally receiving their reading, and when it happened, it was exactly the right message at exactly the right time. The waiting, the hoping, the building of faith was all part of their journey.
Whether you join me at a live event or in one of my online group readings, trust that spirit knows what they’re doing. They see the bigger picture, they understand divine timing, and they love you more than you could ever imagine.
Your loved ones are always with you, always trying to communicate, and when the time is right, their message will come through loud and clear.
