Psychic vs. Medium: A Simple Guide to Understanding the Difference

Matt Fraser, in a light shirt and white pants, stands on a grassy cliff by the ocean, looking upward with one hand on his chest.

Many people naturally use the terms psychic and medium to mean the same thing, which is completely understandable since they can seem quite similar. However, there’s actually an interesting distinction between what a psychic does and what a medium does. I’d love to share a simple way to understand the difference.

What Psychics Actually Do

Psychics read energy from living people and situations. Think of them like spiritual therapists who can sense things about your current life that you might not even realize yourself.

My mother is psychic. When she sits with someone, she’s tuning into their energy field – that invisible bubble of information that surrounds every living person. She might sense that you’re stressed about work, even if you haven’t mentioned your job. She could pick up that you’re having relationship problems before you say anything about your partner.

Psychics focus on:

  • Your current life situation
  • Your personality traits and patterns
  • Potential outcomes based on your present choices
  • Energy around your relationships, career, health
  • Future possibilities (not predictions set in stone)

When you go to a psychic, they’re reading YOU. Your energy, your aura, your emotional state, the vibrations you’re carrying around current situations in your life.

What Mediums Actually Do

Mediums talk to dead people. That’s it. We don’t read your energy or predict your future. We connect with people who have died and deliver their messages to living relatives.

When I do a reading, I’m not looking at your aura or sensing your career prospects. Instead, your deceased grandmother might show up wanting to tell you she’s proud of how you’re raising your kids. Or your father who passed away comes through with a specific message about something only you two would understand.

Mediums focus on:

  • Messages from deceased family members and friends
  • Proof that consciousness continues after death
  • Healing grief by facilitating ongoing relationships with the departed
  • Unfinished business between the living and the dead
  • Comfort and closure around loss

When you go to a medium, we’re connecting with THEM – the spirits of people you’ve lost.

Why People Get Confused

The confusion happens because both abilities seem mysterious, and many people claim to do both. You’ll see signs for “psychic medium readings” everywhere, but most practitioners are stronger in one area than the other.

Also, both types of readings can provide guidance and comfort, just from completely different sources. A psychic might tell you they sense a new relationship coming into your life based on your current energy. A medium might tell you that your deceased spouse wants you to know it’s okay to love again.

A Simple Test

If someone is telling you about:

  • Your future career moves
  • Relationship compatibility
  • Personality insights
  • Life path guidance
  • What you should do next

That’s psychic work – they’re reading your living energy.

If someone is telling you about:

  • Messages from your deceased grandmother
  • What your late father wants you to know
  • Proof that your loved one is still “around”
  • Unfinished conversations with someone who died
  • Specific memories only you and the deceased person shared

That’s mediumship – they’re communicating with spirits.

What I Actually Do

I can do some psychic work – I inherited spiritual sensitivity from my mother and grandmother. But my real gift is mediumship. I’ve been seeing and talking to deceased people since I was a child, like that kid in The Sixth Sense.

When people ask if I can tell them about their love life or whether they should take a new job, I explain that’s not what I do. I can connect them with their deceased loved ones who might have opinions about their choices, but the guidance comes from the spirit world, not from reading their current energy patterns.

The dead don’t usually come through to give career advice. They come with messages about love, forgiveness, family dynamics, and things they need their living relatives to understand.

Understanding the difference helps you know what kind of reading you actually need. If you want insight about your current life situation or future possibilities, seek out a psychic. If you want to connect with someone who’s died, you need a medium.

Both abilities serve important purposes, but they work in completely different ways and provide different types of healing and guidance.

The most important thing to remember is that you don’t need special abilities to maintain a connection with loved ones who’ve passed. The love between you continues whether or not you can communicate with them through a medium.

If you want to connect with your loved ones, I hope you’ll join me.

Love

  1. I hope to see you in person someday. I have lost a lot of my family. When ever I have seen a medium people in my family always come through. I was at a private reading one day a group of about 30 women. And I had five family members come through. You are the only one I’ve seen that seems to be real I enjoy seeing you. Thank you for sharing your time with all of us.

  2. Very good explanation but do you actually see the person in.human former is it just a voice with.some type of other vision?

  3. My wife has been dead for 2 years this month and I haven’t heard from her that I know. Why is that?

  4. I have attended many of your online readings, but never got a reading. I have been hoping to hear from my son. I just want him to let me know he is ok and has he seen his grandparents. I miss him so much.

  5. I am so glad to see that you have posted this. I’ve been saying for years that mediums are not “psychics”. They are not here to tell you your future. They are here to let you hear from your loved one who has passed. I am going to keep this email for a reference when the need comes to “defend” myself from someone who just doesn’t get it!! Thanks again. See you Sept. 26th in Waterville, Maine.

  6. You are by far the most beautiful person who has been so generous with your gift and your growing family is an inspiration your wife is so right for you matches your energy love and spiritual goodness if that is even a thing its just the words that came to me

  7. Unexplainably I Resonate as having the abilities of both…🪽💞
As a beginner It has taken Me 63 years to understand so many things about growing up & not understanding so many different feelings 🪽💞

  8. Sadly I can’t talk to ask you a question.
I live in Britain and you can’t help me. Thank you as your books help me so much . I don’t even believe you read this message .

  9. Thank you for explaining the difference between a psychic and a medium. I thought psychic and medium was the same. I found it quite interesting 🤔

  10. Definitely understand the difference but I too would like to know if you see a silhouette or a spirit body if you will. I hope to get an online reading someday as I’ve tried numerous times. I will keep trying. I love Matt Frasier gor sharing his gift. What a blessing to all.

    God Bless,
    Julie

  12. Dear Matt, I understand what is the difference between a psychic and a medium. As I went to one in my 30’s back in the 1990’s in Boston. I was a skeptic at first. Until the guy was showing me my future. He told me to write it down, and I didn’t. Until when those moments came into my life. I believe things happen for a reason. Being a natural empath and intuitive as I got older. And in the past, mediums did see what I have seen, deaths, tragic one. The universe did show me what to see and believe in times in need. Especially in dreams. I believe that everyone is here on this earth for a reason. You have that choice of what path you go. Learn from it

  13. Thanks Matt, I was a little confused about this. Now I’ll wait to hear from my Dad to tell me what to do! He passed in June of 2021. (I am officially lost !!) But I do know I’m responsible for my own path.

  14. Thinking they were the same thing. Thank you for letting your followers know they are different. These past 9 years have had the oddest weird some very distracting dreams and feelings that’s hard to shake off that I would normally never have and don’t feel they are coming from me at all and find it rather distrubing. Can someone actually send you dreams? How could I dream such dreams if they’re from my higher self? Have you ever heard of this as a physics or medium? I know at one time a military person lived where I’m at now around 1940s. Could that energy still be here? Just curious.

  15. I’ve read all your books and attended 14 on line readings and 1 live show I try to stay positive I loss 3 sisters and my Mom going on nine years now and haven’t heard anything
