The Art of Letting Go: Tools for Emotional Release and Healing 


What keeps you up at night? Chances are, you can reel off a list of things without even thinking about it.

Modern society provides us all with plenty to worry about, from the catastrophic to the trivial. You might have accepted living in a constant state of mild to severe anxiety as the norm, but it doesn’t have to be that way! Stress can take a major toll on your health, happiness, and relationships with others. Not only that, but fear, worry, and anxiety create an energy around you that blocks you from manifesting the things you really desire. 


Fight or Flight.


The fight or flight response happens in your body, and is triggered by the perception of a threat – real or imagined. When it senses danger, your body releases stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which prepare the body to either fight the threat or run away from it. While this response can be helpful when you’re faced with an actual  physical threat, it can also be triggered by emotional stressors, leading to physical illness, chronic stress and anxiety. 


But don’t let what I’m telling you get you down! There are many effective tools for letting go and releasing fear, worry, and negativity. They can help counteract the fight or flight response by promoting relaxation and reducing stress. 


Seven Tools for Letting Go and Releasing Fear, Worry and Negativity. 


Mindfulness Meditation: How many times have you worked yourself into a frenzy worrying about something that hasn’t even happened yet, or that’s over and done with and can’t be changed. Imagine how much less you’d have to worry about if you just focused on what’s happening right now. Mindfulness meditation is a practice of bringing your attention to the present moment, observing your thoughts and emotions without judgment. In just a few minutes a day, this practice can help you detach from negative thoughts and feelings that you can’t control, reducing their hold on you and making you feel calmer. 


Journaling: Mental health professionals have been advocating journaling for years as a valuable tool for mental well-being.  Writing down your thoughts and emotions is an effective way of processing and gaining clarity on what’s going on in your life, especially those things that you have difficulty talking about to others. When you write, you give yourself permission to express your innermost feelings without fear of judgment or repercussion.


Forgiveness: Forgiving yourself and others is a key component of letting go. Refusing to forgive keeps you stuck, energetically. You are basically building a cage for yourself and living in it, while the person you’re upset with goes about their life. Unlock your cage and set yourself free! Keep in mind that forgiveness doesn’t mean condoning harmful behavior, but rather releasing the anger, resentment, and pain that may be holding you back.


Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): EFT, also known as tapping, involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body, including the top of the head, eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, and under the arm, while focusing on a specific issue or emotion. Breathwork: Conscious breathing exercises can help calm the mind and body, reducing stress and anxiety. The 4-7-8 breathing technique involves breathing in for 4 seconds, holding your breath for 7 seconds, then exhaling for 8 seconds. A few cycles of 4-7-8 breathing can actually lower your blood pressure, and regular sessions of meditative breathing can help release trapped emotions and energy in the body.


Movement: Physical movement, such as yoga or dance, can help release pent-up emotions and energy in the body. Moving your body can also help shift your focus away from negative thoughts and feelings and release a natural dose of mood enhancing dopamine and serotonin.


Nature: Spending time in nature can be a powerful tool for emotional release and healing. Being in nature can help you connect with the present moment and bring a sense of peace and calm. To get the most of your time in the great outdoors, meditate, exercise, or even journal in the sunshine to combine two effective techniques and feel your best. 


Life is too short and there’s too much to accomplish to spend your energy stressing about things you can’t control. By incorporating these tools into your daily routine, you can learn to let go of fear, worry, and negativity, and experience the emotional release and healing you need to live your best life.
