7 Signs From Heaven Your Loved One Is Trying to Send You

Have you ever woken from a dream about someone you love and felt their presence long after you opened your eyes? Maybe their favorite song played at the exact moment you were thinking about them. Maybe you saw their birthday on a license plate, smelled their perfume in an empty room, or noticed a cardinal watching you from the fence.

Could that really be a sign from heaven?

As a psychic medium, this is one of the questions I hear most often during mediumship readings. People want to know whether these moments are meaningful or whether grief is simply making them notice things they would otherwise overlook.

Here is what I have learned after connecting with thousands of souls on the other side: our loved ones often use ordinary parts of our everyday lives to remind us that love does not end when the physical body does.

These signs from heaven are usually gentle. They are personal. They often arrive when you need comfort most.

They are not meant to frighten you. This is not to be feared. It is a reminder that the bond you shared is still very much alive.

Sign #1: Dream Visits

The number one way, and the clearest channel the other side has, is the dream visit.

But let me be clear about something, because this is where people get confused. There is a difference between dreaming about your loved one and being visited by them.

A regular dream is fuzzy, strange, and out of order. You are at your childhood home, but it is also a boat. Someone from high school is standing beside your cousin, even though they have never met. You know how dreams are.

A visit is different.

The souls tell me a true visit feels more real than real. The colors are vivid. Your loved one looks healthy, usually younger, at their best, and glowing. They may be wearing something familiar, standing in a room you both remember, or simply looking at you with the same expression they had in life.

And here is the tell: in a true visit, they usually do not say much. They do not need to. You wake up with the feeling, the hug, the peace, or the message, and it stays with you all day. Sometimes it stays with you for years.

I once did a reading for a man whose wife had passed. She came through and showed me a dream he had where she was standing in their kitchen in a yellow dress. She just smiled at him.

He broke down and said, “I had that dream two years ago and I still think about it every morning.”

And she said, “That wasn’t a dream. That was our date.”

If you have had one of those dreams, the dream you can still feel, I believe it may have been a visit. If you have not had one yet, ask for one. Say your loved one’s name out loud before bed and let them know you are open to seeing them.

The souls tell me it takes tremendous energy to come through this way, so it may not happen on the first night. But they hear the request. Every time.

Sign #2: Their Song, Right on Time

Sign number two is music. And it is not just that you heard their favorite song. It is the timing.

You are driving to the cemetery and their song comes on. You are crying in the car on their birthday and their song begins playing. You just said their name out loud for the first time in weeks, and suddenly, there it is.

The souls love this sign because they do not have to create anything. They simply have to nudge you toward the right station, the right shuffle, or the right moment.

One soul described it to me this way:

“I can’t call her phone, so I use the radio.”

That is exactly how it can feel. A song becomes a bridge between this world and the next.

Here is how you know it may be more than a coincidence: it hits you in the chest before your brain even catches up. You feel them in the song. Your body knows before your mind starts arguing.

Of course, music is always playing somewhere, and not every song is necessarily a message. You do not have to force meaning into every moment. But when a song arrives with perfect timing and brings an unmistakable sense of your loved one, allow yourself to receive the comfort.

Sign #3: Repeating Numbers

Sign number three is numbers.

Maybe you see 11:11 on the clock. Maybe your loved one’s birthday appears on a license plate. Perhaps the date they passed shows up on a receipt. You might notice 555, 444, or another number pattern over and over until you cannot ignore it.

People often ask me, “Matt, why numbers?”

Because numbers are everywhere, and the souls work with what is already around you. They cannot tap you on the shoulder in the same physical way they once did, so they highlight something in your environment.

You have walked past a thousand license plates this month, but that one, the one with Dad’s birthday, made you stop.

That stop, that little jolt of recognition, may be the tap on the shoulder.

The number itself matters less than the pattern and the timing. Once is a number. Twice is interesting. But when it follows you for a week during the exact time you have been struggling, missing someone, or asking for guidance, it can feel like something more personal.

This is why people search for “heaven numbers.” They are not always looking for a universal dictionary that says 444 means one thing and 555 means another. They are often asking, “What does this number mean to me, and why am I seeing it now?”

When the pattern feels connected to your loved one, pause and acknowledge it. You can simply say, “I see you. Thank you.”

That is the message: “I’m here. Keep going.”

Sign #4: The Visitors, Cardinals, Butterflies, and Dragonflies

Sign number four is the winged messenger.

Cardinals, butterflies, dragonflies, hummingbirds, and honestly, whatever creature your loved one claims can become part of the language between you.

The souls tell me they can influence living things and gently guide them toward you. They pick the moments.

It may be the cardinal that lands on the fence during the graveside service. It may be the butterfly that follows you around the yard on Mother’s Day and will not leave.

I had a woman at one of my live shows whose daughter came through. She said, “Ask Mom about the dragonfly at the pool.”

The mother gasped.

A dragonfly had landed on her hand at the pool that summer and stayed there for ten full minutes while she cried.

Ten minutes.

Dragonflies do not do that. Unless someone sends them.

And listen, it does not have to be a classic sign animal. I have had souls send squirrels, deer, and a specific neighborhood cat.

My rule is simple: if the animal behaves strangely, gets unusually close, lingers, looks directly at you, or shows up on a meaningful day, pay attention.

Nature is one of Heaven’s favorite delivery services.

Sign #5: Electricity, Lights, TVs, and Phones

Sign number five is electricity.

You may notice flickering lights, a television turning on by itself, or your phone acting strangely. Perhaps it plays a voicemail you did not touch or opens a photo of your loved one out of nowhere.

Here is what the souls have taught me about this: spirit is energy. They do not have a physical body anymore, but they can still push on energy. Electronics are often the easiest things in your home for them to influence.

That is why these experiences may spike around emotional moments such as birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, or the exact moment you are thinking about them.

One family I read for told me their father’s garage radio, which had been unplugged for a year after he passed, was found playing when they came home from his memorial.

Unplugged.

I hear versions of that story constantly.

Now, I also want to be practical and reassuring. Check the outlet, the wiring, the batteries, and the settings if something in your home behaves strangely. Not every flickering light is a message. But if everything is in order and the experience happens alongside a strong feeling of your loved one, you can acknowledge it without fear.

If it happens in your house, do not be scared. Nothing scary is happening.

That is not a haunting. That is a hello.

Sign #6: The Scent Out of Nowhere

Sign number six gives people chills: the phantom scent.

It may be her perfume in a closed room. His cigar smoke, even though nobody around you smokes. Grandma’s Sunday gravy in a house where nobody is cooking.

It comes out of nowhere. It is unmistakably them. Then it is gone.

The souls love scent because it is a straight shot to your memory. There is no thinking involved. You do not smell Chanel No. 5 and wonder what it means. You smell it, and suddenly, you are eight years old in her lap again.

Instantly.

The souls tell me they wrap the scent around you like an embrace. It is their version of walking into the room.

As with any unusual smell, it is wise to make sure there is not a practical source, especially if the scent is burning, chemical, or persistent. But if you catch a familiar fragrance that appears briefly and brings your loved one immediately to mind, allow yourself to feel what comes with it.

If that has ever happened to you and you told yourself, “That’s impossible,” go back to that moment and replace “impossible” with “hello.”

Because that is what it was.

Sign #7: The Thought That Is Not Yours

And now, number seven.

This is the one everybody dismisses. It is the sign the souls tell me is easiest for them to send, and the one we ignore the most.

It is the thought that drops in out of nowhere.

You are washing dishes, thinking about nothing, and suddenly, there they are. Not a memory you were reaching for. They simply arrive in your mind so vividly that you almost say their name.

Or you suddenly know something: call your sister, take the other road, look in the top drawer. Then it turns out to be exactly right.

Here is what the souls have taught me: when a loved one comes close to you in spirit, your mind picks them up like a radio catching a station.

That “random” thought of them is not random. It is proximity.

They describe it like this:

“When she suddenly thinks of me, that’s not her remembering me. That’s me visiting her.”

Read that again.

When they pop into your head out of nowhere, that may not simply be you remembering them. It may be them visiting you.

This is the sign that changes everything once you accept it, because it means the connection is already open. You have been hearing from them all along, in the checkout line, in the car, and in the quiet before you fall asleep.

Every single one of those moments may have been a visit. You just never knew what to call it.

How to Receive Signs Without Forcing Them

The best thing you can do is stay open without becoming anxious. You do not need to search every room for proof or demand that a sign arrive on a particular schedule.

Notice what brings peace. Notice the timing. Notice what feels personal to your relationship.

You may want to keep a small journal beside your bed and write down dreams, songs, heaven numbers, animal encounters, electrical experiences, scents, or sudden thoughts. Over time, patterns can become easier to recognize.

And if you do not receive a sign right away, please do not assume that your loved one is gone or that you are doing something wrong. Grief can make us tired, guarded, and overwhelmed. The connection may still be there, even when you cannot feel it.

Your love is not measured by the number of signs you see.

If you want to deepen your understanding of spirit communication, I invite you to join me at one of my live events, take part in an online group reading, explore my books about heaven and the afterlife, or discover the spiritual practices offered through my courses to enhance your own psychic ability.

You are not alone in this. The signs may be subtle, but love knows how to find a way through.

With peace from the other side,
