The Eternal Now: Why Time Doesn’t Exist in the Afterlife Compared to Earth

A desk with an hourglass, golden clock, angel wings, books, candles, blue feather, astrology book by Matt Fraser in sunlight.

Have you ever looked at the clock and felt that heavy tug in your chest because it has been exactly five years since you last heard your mother’s voice? Or maybe you were driving and realized it has been a decade since your soulmate passed away. On Earth, time is a constant reminder of what we have lost. We live by the ticking of a clock, the turning of calendar pages, and the gray hair that shows up in the mirror. We are obsessed with “before” and “after.”

But I want to tell you something that will change the way you look at your grief and your connection to the Other Side. In the afterlife, time does not exist. There is no such thing as a “long time” in Heaven. While you are down here counting the days and feeling the weight of every passing second, your loved ones are experiencing what I call the Eternal Now.

The Ticking Clock of Earth

On Earth, we are bound by physics. We have schedules to keep, deadlines to meet, and a very limited amount of “time” in these physical bodies. When someone passes away, we feel like a door has slammed shut and a timer has started. We worry that as the years go by, our loved ones will drift further away or that they will get “tired” of waiting for us to join them.

Does my dad think I’ve forgotten him because it’s been twenty years?

Is my grandmother bored sitting on a cloud waiting for me to arrive?

I hear these questions all the time during my private readings. We project our human limitations onto the spirit world because it is the only way we know how to perceive reality. We think that if we feel the passage of time, they must feel it too. But the truth is much more beautiful and visionary than that.

What is the Eternal Now?

In the afterlife, the past, the present, and the future are all happening at once. Imagine it like a giant, beautiful tapestry. On Earth, we are like tiny ants crawling across one single thread of that tapestry. We can only see the inch right in front of us. But in Heaven, your loved ones are standing back and seeing the entire design all at once.

They aren’t “waiting” for you in the way we wait for a bus or a doctor’s appointment. There is no boredom in the spirit world because there is no linear progression of minutes. When a spirit leaves their physical body, they step out of the stream of time and into a dimension where every moment is accessible.

This is why, during a reading, a spirit can talk about a memory from thirty years ago as if it just happened this morning. To them, it did. They aren’t reaching back into a dusty archive. They are simply shifting their focus to that specific point in the “Now.”

Why Spirits Can Be Everywhere at Once

One of the most common things people ask me is how a spirit can be with me in a studio in Rhode Island while also being at their daughter’s house in California. If time and space were real in the afterlife, they would be stuck in one spot, right?

But because they exist in the Eternal Now, they aren’t limited by speed or distance. They move at the speed of thought. The moment you think of your husband, he is there. He doesn’t have to “travel” from a distant planet or fly through the clouds. He simply vibrates at the frequency of your love.

I once knew a woman who was terrified to leave her house because she thought her son’s spirit was “attached” to his bedroom. She felt like if she went on vacation, she was leaving him behind. I had to explain to her that her son isn’t sitting in a chair in that room waiting for her to walk in. He is in the Eternal Now. He can be watching her enjoy the beach in Florida while simultaneously being present for his best friend’s wedding in New York.

They Don’t Feel the “Gap” of Grief

This is perhaps the most healing part of understanding the lack of time in the afterlife. When you finally reunite with your loved ones in Heaven, it won’t feel like you’ve been apart for decades to them. To a spirit, the moment they passed away and the moment you arrive in Heaven happen almost simultaneously.

They don’t experience the agonizing “wait” that we do. While you might spend fifty years missing them, to them, it feels like the blink of an eye. This is why they are always so joyful and refreshed when they come through in readings. They aren’t weary from waiting. They are vibrant because they are living in a state of constant, peaceful presence.

Don’t be scared that they are missing out on your life or that you are “falling behind.” They are witnessing your life from a perspective where they already see the happy ending. They see your struggles, but they also see the growth those struggles bring. They aren’t worried about the “when” because they can see the “always.”

Seeing the Signs in “Real Time”

Have you ever noticed that you seem to see “Heavenly numbers” like 11:11 or 4:44 exactly when you are thinking about someone you lost? Or maybe you smell your grandfather’s specific brand of pipe tobacco or your mom’s Italian gravy right when you’re feeling lonely.

This isn’t a coincidence. Because your loved ones are in the Eternal Now, they are constantly tuned into your frequency. They don’t need to check a watch to see if it’s a “good time” to visit. They respond to your soul’s call instantly.

When you see those signs, it is a reminder that the barrier between our world and theirs is much thinner than we think. They are trying to show you that even though your “clock” is ticking, they are right there in the room with you. They see you putting the leash on the dog at the same coat stand where it has always hung. They see you crying over the photo on the mantle. They are present for every single second because, to them, every second is precious and accessible.

Living in the Now While You’re Still Here

One of the best ways to connect with your loved ones is to try and step into their world for just a moment. We spend so much time worrying about the future or mourning the past. We are rarely ever in the present.

When you sit in silence, meditate, or simply take a deep breath and focus on the love you feel for someone in spirit, you are stepping out of the “ticking clock” and into the Eternal Now. That is where the connection happens. That is where the healing begins.

Don’t let the calendar make you feel like your loved ones are getting further away. In the spirit world, there is no distance and there is no delay. They are as close to you today as they were the day they left, and they will be just as close to you fifty years from now.
