Have you ever sat by the bedside of a loved one who was reaching the end of their journey here on Earth? If you have, you might have noticed something that felt a little bit like magic. Maybe they started staring at a corner of the room that seemed empty to you. Perhaps they began whispering the name of a grandmother who passed away twenty years ago. Or maybe, in a sudden burst of energy, they reached their hands up toward the ceiling as if they were trying to catch a falling star.
It is a moment that can be both startling and deeply emotional. In the medical world, they might call it “terminal restlessness” or “hallucinations.” But I am here to tell you that what you are seeing is something much more beautiful. You are witnessing the “Reach.” You are seeing your loved one catch a glimpse of the Heavenly Welcome Committee that has come to escort them home.
When the Veil Becomes Paper-Thin
As a psychic medium, I spend my life talking to the other side. One thing I have learned is that the wall between our world and the spirit world isn’t a thick brick wall. It is more like a thin, shimmering curtain. Most of the time, that curtain stays closed. But when someone is getting ready to cross over, that curtain starts to become transparent.
Think of it like being in a theater before the show starts. You can see the shadows moving behind the curtain. You can hear the muffled voices of the actors getting ready. For the person who is passing, the show is about to begin. They start to see through the fabric of our physical reality and into the vibrant, glowing world that awaits them.
This thinning of the veil is a gift from God and the universe. It ensures that nobody ever makes the journey to the other side alone. We come into this world surrounded by people who love us, and we leave this world exactly the same way.
Meeting the Welcome Committee
Who is on this welcoming committee? I hear stories about this all the time in my readings. Recently, a client of mine told me about her father’s final moments. He had been non-responsive for days, but suddenly he opened his eyes, smiled, and said, “Is that you, Maria?” Maria was his wife who had passed away a decade earlier.
The welcoming committee is usually made up of the people who loved your family member the most. It could be their parents, a spouse, a sibling, or even a child who went before them. They are the “Advance Team.” Their job is to stand at the threshold and say, “Don’t be afraid. We are right here. We’ve been waiting for you.”
Have you ever felt a sudden chill or a sense of peace in a room where someone is passing? That is often the energy of those spirits arriving to do their job. They bring a sense of calm that helps the person in the bed let go of their physical pain. It is a transition from the heavy, tired body into the light, free spirit.
Why Do They Reach?
The physical act of reaching is one of the most common things people report. It is as if the person’s soul is already half out of their body, and they are trying to bridge the final gap. I once spoke with a woman whose grandfather reached up so high he almost lifted himself out of bed. He was looking at something she couldn’t see, but he had the biggest smile on his face.
This is not a sign of confusion. It is a sign of recognition. When you see this, don’t try to pull their hands back down or tell them they are “seeing things.” Instead, ask them who they see. Ask them what it looks like. When you validate their experience, you help them feel safe. You are acknowledging that their transition is real and that they are being taken care of.
If you want to learn more about how our loved ones communicate with us from the other side, you can explore my course on Signs from Heaven. It helps you understand that these moments aren’t just one-time events, but part of a lifelong connection.
It’s Not Just People, It’s Pets Too
Don’t be surprised if your loved one mentions a favorite dog or cat that passed away years ago. Spirits often tell me that our pets are the first ones to run toward us when we cross the bridge. They are part of that welcoming committee too!
I’ve had many sessions where a spirit describes how their childhood dog was sitting right there at the foot of the bed in their final hours. It brings such a sense of comfort. Our pets know our souls better than almost anyone, and their presence is a huge part of making the journey home feel familiar and safe.
A Message for the Living
If you have witnessed “The Reach,” please know that it was a message for you, too. It was a way for the universe to show you that there is nothing to fear. Death isn’t an ending; it is a change of address. Your loved one wasn’t “losing their mind.” They were gaining their sight.
Watching someone see the other side before they leave can be a healing experience if you let it be. It is the ultimate proof that life goes on. I see this confirmation every single day when I do my online readings. The spirits come through and describe exactly what happen
ed in those final moments, confirming that they saw the light and the loved ones waiting for them.
What to Do in Those Final Moments
If you find yourself in the room when the veil is thinning, here is how you can support your loved one:
- Create a Peaceful Environment: Keep the room quiet and filled with love. Soft music or familiar scents can help.
- Encourage Them: If they say they see someone, say, “That’s wonderful. Give them a hug for me.”
- Listen for Names: They might mention people you didn’t even know were important to them. These are often ancestors who are stepping forward to help.
- Don’t Be Afraid: Your fear can sometimes tether them to the physical world. By showing them you are okay with them seeing the “other side,” you give them permission to go peacefully.
Have you ever wondered if your loved ones can see you after they pass? The answer is a resounding yes. They are just as present after they cross over as they were during that “welcome committee” moment. You can learn more about maintaining that connection in my course Keeping in Touch.
The Beauty of the Other Side
The reports we get from people who have had near-death experiences, combined with the messages I receive from the spirit world, all point to the same thing. The other side is a place of intense colors, overwhelming love, and total peace. When the welcoming committee shows up, they are bringing a “sample” of that energy into the hospital room or the bedroom.
That is why the person passing often looks so peaceful. They are feeling the warmth of the light before they even fully step into it. It is like feeling the sun on your face through a window before you actually step outside.

Closing Thoughts
“The Reach” is one of the most sacred experiences we can witness as human beings. It is a bridge between two worlds. If you have seen it, hold that memory close to your heart. It is a gift from your loved one and from Heaven, showing you that the afterlife is real and that we are never, ever alone.
This life is just one chapter in a much bigger story. Your loved ones are waiting, the light is bright, and the welcoming committee is already preparing for the day we all eventually make that journey back home.
If you are looking for more comfort or want to dive deeper into the mysteries of the afterlife, I invite you to join me for an online group reading.
