Have you ever stopped to think about what it actually feels like to be a soul? Most of us spend our entire lives focused on the “wrapper.” We worry about our hair, our weight, that nagging pain in our lower back, and how we look in photos. Our physical body is our identity. It is how we navigate the world and how people recognize us.
So, it is completely natural to wonder: once we cross over, do we miss it? Do your loved ones in Spirit feel “naked” or “lost” without their physical form?
I get asked this question all the time during my mediumship readings. People often worry that being a spirit is a lonely or scary experience because they imagine it as being “less than” human. They picture a ghost drifting aimlessly, wishing they could just feel the wind on their face or taste a slice of pizza one more time.
I have spent my life communicating with the other side as a death medium, and I am here to tell you something that might surprise you. Your loved ones aren’t missing their bodies at all. In fact, they feel like they finally traded in a clunky, old bicycle for a private jet.
The Driver and the Car
To understand why the dead don’t miss their bodies, you have to understand what the body actually is. I always use the “car and driver” analogy to explain this.
Think of your body as a vehicle. It is a beautiful, complex machine that allows your soul to travel through this physical world. Your soul is the driver. While you are here on Earth, you are “strapped in” to this car. You see through the windshield (your eyes), you hear through the speakers (your ears), and you feel every bump in the road.
But what happens when the car gets too old to run? What happens when the engine fails or the body becomes too damaged to keep going?
The driver doesn’t die with the car. The driver simply opens the door and steps out.
When your loved ones cross over, they realize that they were never the car. They were always the driver. Once they are out of that vehicle, they realize how heavy and restrictive it actually was. Imagine wearing a heavy, wool winter coat in the middle of a humid July day. Now imagine finally taking it off. That sense of “ahhh, I can breathe again” is exactly how it feels to leave the physical body.
The Ultimate Physical Relief
Think about the people you love who have passed away. Many of them may have struggled with illness, age, or chronic pain. Maybe your grandmother had terrible arthritis, or your father struggled with his breathing.
One of the most beautiful things I see during psychic readings is the sheer joy of a spirit who is suddenly free from physical limitations. When they step out of that “suit,” the pain instantly vanishes. The blindness is gone. The deafness is gone. The fatigue that made them want to sleep all day is replaced by a vibrant, electric energy.
Do they miss the body that caused them so much struggle? Not for a second.
In the spirit world, they aren’t limited by gravity or biology. They move at the speed of thought. If they want to be by your side while you are pouring your morning coffee, they are there in a heartbeat. They don’t have to wait for a bus or deal with a sore hip to get to you.
Why They Don’t Hang Out at the Cemetery
This is a big one that I need to clear up. Many people find comfort in visiting a gravesite, and that is a beautiful way to honor a memory. However, I often hear people worry that their loved one is “stuck” there or lonely in the ground.
As the best psychic in the United States, I can tell you with 100% certainty: your loved ones are not at the cemetery.
Think back to that car analogy. If you got into a bad accident and had to junk your car, would you spend your weekends sitting in the junkyard staring at the rusted metal? Of course not. You have a life to live!
The body left behind at a gravesite is just the old “suit” they used to wear. It was a great suit, and it served them well, but it isn’t them. Your loved ones are much more likely to be found in your living room, at the dinner table, or walking beside you in the park than they are sitting in a graveyard. They have moved on to a higher frequency where they are fully alive and fully aware.
If you are worried that your house might be feeling a bit crowded with these visitors, you might want to check out my post on does your house feel haunted. Most of the time, it’s just Spirit saying hello!
Do They Still Look Like Themselves?
You might be wondering: “If they don’t have a body, how will I recognize them when I cross over?”
This is the visionary part of the afterlife. Spirit is made of energy, and energy is incredibly flexible. While they don’t have a “meat suit” anymore, they can project whatever image they want.
Usually, when a spirit comes through in a reading, they show themselves in their “prime.” They show themselves at the age and health where they felt most like themselves. If your grandfather loved his 40s because he was strong and happy, that is likely how he will appear to you.
They use their former appearance as a way to communicate. It is like a spiritual ID card. They project the “body” that you recognize so that you know it’s them. But they aren’t “inside” it the same way we are. They are wearing it like a costume to make us feel comfortable.
Looking Back with Gratitude
Even though they don’t miss being in a body, spirits do look back on their physical selves with a lot of love.
I once did a reading for a woman who was very insecure about her weight her whole life. When her sister came through from the other side, the sister’s message was so beautiful. She said, “I wish you could see your body the way I see it now. It was the vessel that carried your beautiful soul. It was never about the size; it was about the life you lived in it.”
When we are on the other side, we see the body for what it truly was: a gift. It allowed us to feel the warmth of a hug, the taste of a home-cooked meal, and the physical sensation of a heartbeat. Spirits are grateful for the “vehicle,” but they have no desire to climb back into the driver’s seat of a physical form. They have graduated.
The Difference Between Spirits and Ghosts
You might be thinking, “But Matt, what about ghosts? Don’t they stay attached to the physical world?”
There is a big difference between a spirit who has crossed over and what we call a “ghost.” A ghost is often an energy that is temporarily “stuck” or lingering because of unfinished business or a sudden, traumatic exit. They might be clutching onto the physical world because they aren’t ready to let go of their “stuff” or their identity.
However, once a soul fully crosses into the Light, that heavy attachment to the physical world fades away. They still care about you, but they don’t care about their old house, their old car, or their old body. They have moved from a world of “having” to a world of “being.”
Once they experience the liberation of the spirit world, the physical world starts to look like a very small, very slow-motion movie. Why would they want to go back to being confined to one place and one body when they can now experience everything at once?
Our Spiritual Connection
The most important thing to remember is that the lack of a body doesn’t mean a lack of connection. In fact, without the “interference” of a physical body, Spirit can actually be closer to us than ever before.
When we are in our bodies, we have barriers. We have walls, we have distance, and we have the physical space between us. When a loved one passes, those barriers disappear. They are no longer “over there” at their house; they are right here in your heart.
Your soul and their soul are made of the same stuff. We are all connected by a spiritual “Wi-Fi” that doesn’t need a physical antenna to work. Whether it’s a person or even a pet, that bond remains. If you’re curious about how our furry friends handle the transition, you should read about the spiritual connection between people and animals.

Don’t Fear the Upgrade
If you are afraid of the idea of losing your body, I want you to take a deep breath and let that fear go. You aren’t “losing” anything; you are gaining everything.
Death is not a “downgrade.” It is the ultimate upgrade. It is the moment you step out of the car and realize you can run faster than the car could ever drive. It is the moment you realize you are not the skin and bones you see in the mirror, but a magnificent, eternal being of light.
Your loved ones are happy. They are healthy. They are free. And most importantly, they are still with you. They don’t need a body to love you, to guide you, or to hear your prayers.
If you want to learn more about how the afterlife works and how you can start to feel the presence of your loved ones even without their physical bodies, I would love to help you on your journey.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXPLAINATION OF THE AFTERLIFE UPGRADE..BUT AT THE AGE OF 2 I DIDN’T WANT TO BE A SPIRIT.I WANTED TO DO MY WORK IN THE PHYSICAL DIMENSION ..
Chris here. I could say so much Here. My son I knew was better immediately. He inserted a pic of himself on a series of pics I put on a Facebook post after he passed. I was meticulous with the pics I was posting after he passed and checked it all over before I posted. So then after I did there was one of him I did not put in there. The same pic appeared in between a few pics I did for a birthday. I did not put it there. He did. ❤️
