Have you ever laid awake at night, staring at the ceiling, wondering if you’ve done enough to earn a spot in the good place? Maybe you grew up hearing terrifying stories about fire, brimstone, and eternal darkness. You might even find yourself worrying about a loved one who struggled in life, wondering, Are they okay, or are they being punished for their mistakes?
It’s a heavy weight to carry. As a psychic medium, I get asked this question more than almost any other. People want to know the truth about the “downstairs.” They want to know if God is waiting with a clipboard to tally up every white lie and missed Sunday service.
I want to put your mind at ease right now. In all the years I’ve been doing mediumship readings, talking to thousands of souls on the other side, I have never once encountered a place of fire and pitchforks. Not once. The “Hell” we’ve been taught to fear simply doesn’t exist in the way we’ve been told.
However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t accountability. The truth about the afterlife is actually much more profound, much more healing, and, believe it or not, much more beautiful than the stories of old.
Breaking the Myth of Eternal Damnation
The first thing you need to understand is that the Spirit World is a place of incredible, unconditional love. When you cross over, you aren’t greeted by a judge in a courtroom. You are greeted by your family, your friends, and your guardian angels.
The idea of eternal damnation is a very human concept. We like to see “bad people” get punished. We want to see a clear line between the “good” and the “bad.” But from a spiritual perspective, every single person is a soul having a human experience. Some souls lose their way. Some souls struggle with trauma, addiction, or mental illness that clouds their judgment here on Earth.
When these souls pass over, they aren’t cast into a pit of fire. Instead, they are met with healing. Think of it like a spiritual hospital. If someone lived a life full of pain or caused pain to others, their soul is often “heavy.” They don’t go to a place of torture; they go to a place of intense reflection and recovery.
The Life Review: Spiritual Accountability
Now, you might be thinking, So, Matt, are you saying people can just do whatever they want and get away with it?
Absolutely not. This is where the concept of spiritual accountability comes in. While there is no Hell, there is something called The Life Review.
Imagine sitting in a theater where the movie playing is your entire life. But here is the catch: you don’t just watch what happened. You feel it. You feel the joy you gave your mother when you called her just to say “I love you.” You feel the warmth of the stranger you helped.
But you also feel the sting of the words you said in anger. You feel the heartbreak of the person you lied to. You experience the ripple effect of every choice you made. This is the “Hell” that people describe. It isn’t a physical fire; it’s the burning realization of how your actions affected the world around you.
This process isn’t meant to punish you. It’s meant to teach you. The goal of the soul is to grow and to learn how to love more deeply. You can’t fully learn that lesson until you understand the impact of your choices.
The Vibrational Reality of the Afterlife
In the Spirit World, everything is made of energy and vibration. Think of it like a radio station. If you lived a life of kindness, love, and service, your soul is vibrating at a very high, light frequency. You naturally gravitate toward the higher planes of the afterlife where everything is bright and peaceful.
If someone lived a life filled with hatred, greed, or violence, their soul is vibrating at a much lower, denser frequency. They cannot immediately enter those higher realms because they aren’t “tuned in” to them yet.
They might spend time in a “gray” area, a place of quiet reflection where they have to face the darkness they carried within themselves. It’s not a prison, but it feels restrictive because they haven’t yet done the work to raise their vibration. Every soul has the opportunity to move toward the light, but some take much longer than others because they have so much to unlearn.
I once spoke to a woman during one of my mediumship readings who was terrified that her father was in Hell because he had been a very angry, difficult man. When I connected with him, he didn’t show me fire. He showed me a quiet, lonely space. He told her, “I’m seeing all the things I missed because of my pride.” He was in his own version of a “time out,” learning the lessons he refused to learn while he was alive.
Why We Fear the Dark
Fear is a powerful tool, and for centuries, it has been used to keep people in line. But fear is the opposite of faith. When you live in fear of Hell, you are living in a state of spiritual blockage. You are so worried about doing the “wrong” thing that you forget to do the “right” thing, which is to live with an open heart.

What About the “Truly Evil”?
I often get asked, “What about the monsters of history? Surely they don’t get to go to the same place as my sweet grandmother?”
The answer is no, not immediately. In the afterlife, like attracts like. Souls who caused immense suffering are met with the immense weight of that suffering. They have to face every single ounce of pain they caused. For some, that process can feel like an eternity.
But remember, the Divine is more patient than we are. The goal is always restoration, not destruction. Even the darkest soul is eventually given the chance to see the light, though their journey back to it is incredibly long and difficult. They are held accountable in ways we can’t even imagine here on Earth.
Living Without Fear
When you realize that there is no “trap door” waiting to open beneath you, it changes how you live your life today. You stop acting out of fear and start acting out of love. You realize that your Destiny Points are opportunities to bring more light into this world.
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be present. Your loved ones on the other side want you to know that they are safe, they are happy, and they are rooting for you. They aren’t looking down in judgment; they are looking down with a perspective that only comes from being in a place of total peace.

I hope this message finds you well. My husband passed away in July 5 2025. We’ve been together for 23 years and I’ve never suffered with this type of loss before. He was my everything. He was the only person I could never sense being an empath. I was born with my gifts as a child. It was until he passed my angel and spirit guide conveyed that I was not meant to so that way I could experience each and every day as a new experience. I couldn’t tell if he was angry, sad or happy. I’ve been seeing butterflies, hummingbirds, cardinals, dragonflies and lady bugs for a few months after he passed and I know those were the messages you said our loved ones would send to us. When I brought his ashes home I heard my angel or spirit guide reveal to me a message I’ve never read or heard in my life before say “it’s like a river it came be calm waters or choppy and rough waters but it is always flowing” which meant grief. This is reassuring. And logical. I sincerely believe that God sent Jesus for us to brutalize. Why? To teach us forgiveness by example. “Forgive us our trespasses AS WE FORGIVE THOSE…”. We documented what Jesus said – “forgive them Father for they know not what they do.” Would you be able to forgive someone who whipped and beat and nailed your child to a plank of wood? “As we forgive those…” God forgave us, Jesus forgave us. We have no excuse not to forgive others, as we are taught by example.
What about pets ? I was closer to my dogs than to most humans. I want to go wherever they go.

While I do believe in your gifts, your sincerity, and that there are misconceptions about God, Heaven, and so on, I do believe there is a hell. Specifically, demonic forces who do have inhabit a different realm. There are countless near death experiences of people who have witnessed hell, people from all walks of life and nationalities. The whole point of Jesus’s incarnation in the physical world was to save us from ever having to go there. All we have to do is believe he is the captain of our souls, our saviour, and not just a “teacher” or great “humanitarian.”

Dear Matt, I am from South Africa. Your gift is truly amazing and a blessing to thousands of people. But regarding hell ; I believe that very evil are sent to hell. There are those evil spirits that dwell on the earth planes, but the very evil ones get damned to hell. And I think you will not be able to ever have contact with them. So they won’t be able to verify the very fact that they are in hell.

Hi Matt, I just went through something that I used to go through in the past with my dad. I worry he will be in that Gray area as he is greedy and only cares about himself but I never let him know I feel that way. Is there a nice way to tell him he may want to find some kindness in his heart now as he has many medical problems, or do I just leave it alone? Please help
